MLB Going Back To Iowa: Field Of Dreams 2022 Cincinnati Reds vs. Chicago Cubs

By Barry Janoff

August 21, 2021: Following its success earlier this month, MLB said that its Field of Dreams presented by Geico game would return in 2022, with the Cincinnati Reds vs. Chicago Cubs, scheduled for Aug. 11, 2022, in Dyersville, Iowa.

The Reds will serve as the home team.

The game, which will again air on Fox, will be played in Dyersville, Iowa, in a ballpark built by MLB adjacent to the iconic 1989 movie site, which holds up to 8,000 people.

MLB did not yet detail ticket details.

The league conducted a lottery for tickets to the 2021 game between the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox, open only to people with Iowa Zip codes.

The game will be part of a three-game series, with the final two games in Cincinnati.

“Coming soon to a corn field near few,” the Cubs posted to social media. “Cubs vs. Reds, Aug. 11, 2022.”

The Reds posted, “We’re headed to Iowa!”

"The Cincinnati Reds are excited to be part of MLB at Field of Dreams in 2022,” Phil Castellini, Reds president and COO, said via MLB.

“Following the outstanding presentation of last week’s inaugural game between the White Sox and Yankees, it’s an honor to represent Reds Country as the home team in next year’s game."

In addition to Geico, the 2021 game was sponsored and supported by Chevrolet, MasterCard, T-Mobile, Mattress Firm, the National Corn Growers Assn., John Deere, Musco Lighting, Budweiser and Doosan.

MLB official partner Nike has designed throwback uniforms.

Among others, MLB worked with Go The Distance Baseball, the company that operates the "Field of Dreams" site.

"We are honored to be selected for the second edition of MLB at Field of Dreams," Crane Kenney, Cubs president of business operation, said via MLB.

"Given our long-standing affiliation with the Iowa Cubs and the fact the state is in our home television territory, the Cubs enjoy an incredible following in Iowa. We look forward to playing in front of our Iowa fans and expanding on the amazing success of the first Field of Dreams game."

The design of the field pays homage to Comiskey Park in Chicago, which was home for the White Sox from 1910-90, the team for which “Shoeless” Joe Jackson played during the infamous 1919 World Series, which plays a major role in the movie.

Following the Yankees-White Sox game, NBCUniversal said that Field of Dreams would be adapted into a TV series, to air on its Peacock streaming platform.

Mike Schur (The Good Place, The Office) will write the series and be co-executive producer with Lawrence Gordon, who was the producer for the Kevin Costner-James Earl Jones-Ray Liotta movie.
