• Under Armour said this morning that Patrik Frisk, the company’s president and COO, would become its new CEO, effective Jan. 1, 2020. He will also remain president. Company founder, chairman and CEO Kevin Plank, will become executive chairman and brand chief. According to Friske via Under Armour, "The opportunity that lies ahead of us is incredible as our entire global team continues to lean hard into our transformation."

• Sacramento, California's capital city, has been awarded an MLS expansion team with Sacramento Republic FC becoming the league's 29th team and beginning play in MLS in 2022. The club will build a new, $300 million, 20,100-seat soccer stadium in the downtown Railyards District. 

• Octagon and the National Women’s Soccer League have signed a multi-tier consulting partnership, in which Octagon’s Global Media Rights Consulting and Marketing divisions will "advise the NWSL on its league media rights, sponsorship, and marketing." “The growth of the NWSL over the past six years has been tremendous, and the league, its teams and players show absolutely no sign of slowing down,” Christine Franklin, SVP, Marketing, Octagon, said via the firm.

• The Professional Baseball Agreement between MLB and minor league teams expires at the end of the 2020 season. But if a new MLB proposal were to become reality, more than three dozen cities with affiliated minor league teams will lose those teams a year from now and thousands of minor league players will be out of work as well. MLB Players’ Weekend: “Not Justin,” "El K," “Polar Bear,” “Mr. Smile,” “Three Kids"

August 6, 2019: If it’s the Dog Days of Summer, that means it’s time for El De La Sabana, Brown Eyes, Polar Bear and Mr. Smile to play in a MLB stadium near you.

MLB and the MLB Players Assn. have unveiled details for the third annual Players’ Weekend, scheduled for Aug. 23-25.

As in the two previous renditions, players have the option to stylize their jerseys with a nickname or personal message. (See a team-by-team list here.)

Thirty players, one representing each club, have been named Players’ Weekend Ambassadors and will take the lead in activation and teammates’ efforts.

They include Ronald “El De La Sabana” Acuña Jr. (Atlanta Braves), Pete “Polar Bear” Alonso (New York Mets), Cody “Belli” Bellinger (Los Angeles Dodgers), Alex “A-Breg” Bregman (Houston Astros), Lorenzo “Three Kids” Cain (Milwaukee Brewers), Vladimir “El K” Guerrero Jr. (Toronto Blue Jays) , Adam “Roots” Jones (Arizona Diamondbacks), Francisco “Mr. Smile” Lindor (Cleveland Indians), Manny “El Ministro” Machado (San Diego Padres) and CC “Dub” Sabathia (New York Yankees).

During games, players will wear specially designed monochromatic all-black and all-white uniforms created specifically for the weekend-long event with jerseys by Majestic, caps by New Era Cap and socks from Stance.

In addition to the standard uniform items, Players’ Weekend 2019 will be the first MLB event with a league-wide batting helmet.

According to MLB, the same Rawlings helmets used in all regular season contests will be decorated in matte black and matte white to “further accentuate the white-on-white and black-on-black uniforms.”

Pitchers on teams wearing white uniforms will wear black caps to ensure all umpires and batters have clear visibility of each pitch, per MLB.

Players are also given the chance to design, wear and use “creatively colored and decorated equipment” including bats, spikes, batting gloves, wristbands, compression sleeves and catcher’s equipment.

A patch honoring Tyler Skaggs, the pitcher from the Los Angeles Angels who passed away on July 1, will also be available for players to wear on their uniforms, if they choose. The patches will help to raise awareness for the Tyler Skaggs Baseball Foundation, whose mission is to "inspire leadership, confidence, and teamwork through youth projects and family services."

Prior to and after the game, each player will again have the option to wear a T-shirt highlighting a cause or charity of his choice.

New to Players’ Weekend this year will be an expansion of mobile device usage.

Prior to the National Anthem, MLB said that players would be permitted to use their personal handheld mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, on the field or in the dugout to promote the event via social media.

During Players’ Weekend, photo shoots will be conducted with players at ballparks to highlight the standout designs, which MLB said would be amplified over social media among MLB, the MLBPA, clubs and individual player accounts using #PlayersWeekend.

Game-worn, authenticated Players’ Weekend jerseys and batting helmets will be auctioned at MLB.com/auctions.

All proceeds will be donated to the MLB-MLBPA Youth Development Foundation, a joint effort established in July 2015 by MLB and the MLBPA.

An initial commitment of $30 million is “focused on improving the caliber, effectiveness and availability of amateur baseball and softball programs across the U.S. and Canada.”

As for the creativity, some players are going low-key, others quirky.

Boston Red Sox ambassador Markus Betts is going with his well-known nickname, “Mookie.” Matt Carpenter (St. Louis Cardinals) will be “Carp.”

Meanwhile, Texas Rangers ambassador Hunter Pence is going with “¯\_(ツ)_/¯.” Last year he went as “Underpants” (one of his many nicknames is Captain Underpants from the book with the same character).

Jeremy Jeffress (Milwaukee Brewers) will feature a bread emoji alongside a butter emoji.

Eric Sogard (Tampa Bay Rays) has selected “Nerd Power,” with the ‘O’ being replaced with a nerd emoji.

And Shane Bieber of the Cleveland Indians will be “Not Justin,” a nod to the recent Topps error card that confused him with the singer.
