MLB Unveils ‘This Season On Baseball’ As 2017 Umbrella Marketing Campaign

March 27, 2017: Major League Baseball is known as "The Show," which fits perfectly with its 2017 multi-platform campaign, "This Season On Baseball."

With the new season days away, MLB has unveiled what it called an advertising campaign designed to showcase the excitement and perpetual drama that the game of baseball fosters during an emotional season.

The intro 60-second anthem spot, narrated by actor Walton Goggins as if describing an on-going reality TV show, talks about upcoming storylines and features cameos from such players as Mike Trout, Clayton Kershaw, Giancarlo Stanton, Mookie Betts, Edwin Encarnacion, Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Ben Zobrist, Kyle Schwarber and Addison Russell, as well as Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona.

MLB said that as the season progresses, new "This Season On Baseball" promos woull be “created to reflect the milestones, match-ups and unpredictable drama that’s happening in the game.”

Support will include Internet, social media, in-stadium activation and other platforms.

Lead agency is Anomaly, MLB’s creative agency.

The lead spot will break during national broadcasts on ESPN, MLB Network, TBS, Fox Sports and FS1. This and subsequent ads will also run on MLB.com and related digital/social platforms.

"The excitement that the young talent emerging across Major League Baseball brings to the game is really being felt right now,” Tony Petitti, COO for MLB, said in a statement.

"MLB is must-see entertainment with new heroes, stars and stories developing every day and this new creative campaign captures the energy by getting fans excited to watch it all unfold while showcasing our top players and rising stars," said Petitt.

MLB said the material shot was used for variations of the overall "anthem" spot, that previews the league’s top stories going into 2017, as well as breakout ads that focus in on elements like the current crop of talented young shortstops in the game and the pitchers poised to battle for this year’s Cy Young.

It features the track "I Had a Woman" by artist/producer Wax Tailor.

"This season on Baseball, Mike Trout heads to work. Clayton’s mad, and he’s throwing like it,” says Goggins (The Shield, Justified, The Hateful Eight) in voiceover duties on the umbrella anthem spot. "Giancarlo doesn’t care — he’s busy contemplating a 600 foot home run.

"Mookie Betts — the man with the city of Boston resting on his shoulders. Over in Cleveland, Edwin’s got big plans. And the Boys from Queens are back together (New York Mets pitchers Steven Matz, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Matt Harvey). And hungry. This season, Cy Young is up for grabs. José (Altuve) is eyeing .400.

"And Bryce Harper is having visions of cold October ball. These boys (the Chicago Cubs) know the feeling. And everyone else is chasing after it. isn’t that right, Terry. That’s 'This Season on Baseball.'"

MLB plans to break out 15- and 30-second spots from the original 60-second version.
