Dec. 11, 2008: Major League Baseball's next project following the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas will be to put the finishing touches on a marketing campaign to support the World Baseball Classic, March 5 - 23, featuring teams from 16 nations. Hall of Fame Manager Tommy Lasorda has been named Global Ambassador for the 2009 World Baseball Classic, where he will "serve as a spokesman to increase awareness of the tournament and will travel to host cities in an effort to help promote the event and growth of the game of baseball internationally. Lasorda has been associated with the Los Angeles (and Brooklyn) Dodgers as a player, coach, manager and representative for more than 60 years. In 2006, Lasorda starred in a campaign for MLB's postseason in which he proclaimed, "It's October! I live for this! You live for this! The World lives for this! To the TV!" The 2009 World Baseball Classic semi-final and final games will be held at Dodger Stadium from March 21-23. Games will be shown on ESPN and MLB Network, which is launching Jan. 1. The first World Baseball Classic was played in 2006, but moving forward now will be held every four years. Plans are in place to expand the participant field beginning in 2013. Back to Home Page
