Hot Dog (23,000 Of Them): MLB Planning All-Star Feast-ivities During All-Star Events

June 29, 2010: When the 2010 All-Star Game and such surrounding events as the State Farm Home Run Derby move into Angel Stadium at Anaheim in July, players such as Derek Jeter and Albert Pujols will be stepping to the plate even as fans are filling their plates.

Major League Baseball is working in conjunction with Aramark — the exclusive food and beverage partner for the host Angels and 11 other MLB teams — to offer regional menu favorites from throughout the league. Each item will not only represent the stadium and city in which it is served, it also will be authentic as each ballpark’s executive chef will be on hand to oversee the cooking.

This will be in addition to the usual baseball fare served at Angel Stadium during the 2010 season. According to Aramark, for the All-Star festivities from July 9-13, concession stands at Angel Stadium expect  to serve:

  • 23,000 hot dogs
  • 17,600 bags of peanuts
  • 8,200 orders of nachos
  • 5.200 bottles of water
  • 3,300 sausage and pepper sandwiches
  • 2,400 orders of chicken tenders
  • 2,200 hamburgers
  • 1,600 gallons of ice cream.

Aramark also said that it plans to have on hand 800 gallons of ketchup, 600 gallons of mustard and 78,000 pounds of ice.

There will also be a  “Dueling BBQ”  event, with a BBQ destination on each side of Angel Stadium, one from an American League team and one from a National League team. Fans will be able to decide who among Aramark’s chefs is baseball’s best and which league has the best ballpark food, with real-time results of the barbecue competition displayed at each stand.

“The recognition that our award-winning ballpark menus have garnered speaks to the talent of the culinary staff participating in this inaugural ‘Dueling BBQ’ event,” Brian Stapleton, corporate executive chef for Aramark Sports and Entertainment, said in a statement. “We look forward to providing fans with a tour of the cuisine available throughout Major League Baseball and continuing to diversify the menus at our partner ballparks.”

The food being served especially for the All-Star Game and surrounding events represents six American League teams and six National League teams:

  • Los Angeles Angeles/Angel Stadium: Halo Foot Long Dog
  • New York Mets/Citi Field: Citi Field Twisted Sausage & Pepper Sandwich
  • Philadelphia Phillies/Citizens Bank Park: Citizens Bank Park Summer Dog
  • Colorado Rockies/Coors Field: Blake Street Burrito
  • Boston Red Sox/Fenway Park: New England Lobster Roll
  • Kansas City Royals/Kauffman Stadium: Kansas City Ribeye Stack
  • Houston Astros/Minute Maid Park: Texas-style Pulled Pork BBQ Nacho
  • Oakland A's/Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum: Oakland “A’s” Dog
  • Baltimore Orioles/Oriole Park at Camden Yards: Maryland Lump Crab Dog
  • Pittsburgh Pirates/PNC Park: Pittsburgh-style Pastrami Sandwich
  • Toronto Blue Jays/Rogers Centre: Old Canadian Whiskey Smoked BBQ Beef Ribs
  • Atlanta Braves/Turner Field: Knucksie Open-Faced Southern Sandwich

According to Marc Bruno, president of Aramark Sports, Entertainment and Conventions, "Providing fans with a taste of the distinct, local flavors available each night across Major League Baseball is sure to add another layer of competition and enthusiasm to the 2010 All-Star Game experience. This will be a showcase of the best baseball players and the best ballpark food available anywhere in the big leagues.”
