MLS Eyes July Return For David Beckham

David Beckham of the cover of the September 2008 issue of Men's HealthMarch 3, 2009: The David Beckham saga may be nearing a resolution as reports out of Los Angeles and Italy indicate he will be rejoining the Los Angeles Galaxy in July after completing the Italian season with AC Milan. An agreement between the Major League Soccer franchise and AC Milan could be in place this week, according to the Los Angeles Times and various publications in Europe. Beckham has been on loan to AC Milan, but was contractually due to return to the Galaxy on March 9. The new agreement would extend his loan period until the Italian season finale on May 31. Beckham would then play for England's national team in qualifying games for the 2010 World Cup. His return the the U.S. would have to wait until an MLS international transfer window opens on July 15. His first game for the Galaxy could be July 18 at New York and likely won't get the same type of royal treatment as his arrival in the U.S. did two years ago (including a Sports Illustrated cover with Beckham standing on a red carpet). Because of the team's extended road trip and the MLS All-Star Game in Utah on July 29, his first home game would not be until Aug. 15 against the Seattle Sounders. He would return to AC Milan for the 2010 season. "I hope I succeed in sorting it out that he stays till June 30," AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani told the media in Italy. "After that he can go back to Los Angeles, before returning to us next January. That is what we are trying to do. It is complicated as we always knew it would be, but we are still trying."
