Contend It Like Beckham: Soccer Icon Finally Brings MLS Club To South Florida

By Barry Janoff

January 29, 2018: David Beckham, who is used to being in the public eye on the soccer pitch, was less comfortable standing on the stage in a filled to capacity Miami's Adrienne Arsht Center to talk about the resolution of his year’s long quest to bring a MLS franchise to South Florida.

But when he raised his arms in victory and said into a microphone, “Holá, Miami. I promised my son (Brooklyn Beckham), who’s here, that i wouldn’t get emotional. But it’s very hard. This is something that has been a dream for many years,” he knew he could let out a sigh of relief.

The club is scheduled to enter the league in 2020 along with an expansion franchise in Nashville.

The Miami team will play in a temporary site (TBD) in 2020, then move in 2021 to a new 25,000-seat, $200 million privately-funded stadium (being designed by Populous, Kansas City. MO, artist rendition below) in Overtown, according to team ownership.

The team name, logo and colors will be shared over the next few months, “with input from fans,” according to Beckham and his co-owners.

MLS commissioner Don Garber, who was a lead speaker during the Miami unveiling, said, This is an all-star ownership group, one of best in the world.”

In addition to Beckham, it includes real estate businessmen Jorge and Jose Mas, Sprint CEO Marcelo Claire and producer Simon Fuller (XIX Entertainment, who is also Beckham’s agent).

“It’s been very difficult at times,” said Beckham. “At times, we sat back and said this is not going to happen. It’s too difficult. The dream will not happen. People said let it go.

“But nothing in my life has been easy and I don’t give up. What kept me going was you guys — the fans and people of Miami. You are the reason this is happening. Not just a dream for us but for you guys (fans) and that’s the most important thing.”

A sign of Beckham’s popularity among A-listers, as well as Miami’s desire to have a MLS team, was seen in a congratulatory video that ran after the team was unveiled.

It included the likes of Will Smith, Jennifer Lopez, Alonzo Mourning, Serena Williams, Jay-Z, Tom Brady, Neymar, DJ Khaled, Marc Anthony and Usain Bolt; as well as Beckham’s equally famous wife, Victoria Beckham, and their kids.

The news and Beckham’s presence was so big that it was streamed live on MLSsoccer.com, FoxSoccer.com and aired live on Univision Deportes Network (UDN) in the U.S; streamed live on TVA Sports in Canada; and reached a global audience via MLS international broadcast partners Sky Sports and FOX Sports (Latin America).

Beckham’s quest to own a soccer franchise dates back to 2007 when he joined the MLS Los Angeles Galaxy after a stellar career in England with Manchester Untied and the National Team and five seasons with Real Madrid.

“At times, we sat back and said this is not going to happen. It’s too difficult. The dream will not happen. People said let it go."

His MLS deal contained a clause that would enable him after retirement to seek to purchase a franchise for $25 million.

Beckham began to cash in on that clause in 2014 when he joined with a group of businessmen to initiate a plan to bring a MLS club to South Florida.

Four years later, with obstacles that included financial, logistical, political and environmental, Beckham got his approval from MLS, with the Miami club scheduled to join the league along with an expansion club from Nashville.

MLS was last seen in Miami in 2002, when the Fusion folded.

“I’ve gotten phone calls from many different players, top players, saying ‘I’m in',” said Beckham. "We will have top players from around the world, but the key is to build with home-grown talent, and that is what we will do. We will build a soccer academy for home-grown talent who will become top soccer players. And then we can say, Job well done.

“This is a city built on dreams. Today, you made my dream come true,” said Beckham.

To which fans in attendance, as if they were at a soccer match, loudly chanted, “Thank-you Beckham. Thank-you Beckham.”
