Hello, Moto: Indiana Pacers Sign Jersey Ad, Partnership Deal With Motorola

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

December 18, 2018:
And then there was one.

The Indiana Pacers have signed a multi-year deal naming Motorola the team’s first jersey patch partner.

The Pacers will debut the jerseys with the Motorola patch on the court tonight at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The deal means that 29 of the NBA’s 30 teams now have jersey-patch alliances, leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder as the last club without a deal.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

The average value of the previous NBA jersey-patch deals is about $9 million, per industry analysts, most of them three-year alliances.

As part of the partnership agreement, Chicago-headquartered Motorola also becomes the presenting sponsor of the Pacers official team app.

In addition, the partnership will include in-arena, digital and social media presences, along with future fan engagement opportunities.

"From the outset, we wanted a partner that we knew would align well with our organization's culture and values, and Motorola is the perfect match as demonstrated by their leadership and exciting future in the mobile communications industry,” Rick Fuson, Pacers Sports & Entertainment president and COO, said via the team.

“Similar to the way Motorola never stops looking for new ways to deliver the best mobile devices, we constantly strive to deliver the best possible experiences to our fans. We look forward to having Motorola as part of our team in the years to come — allowing us to further connect with our incredible fans and grow our brand across the globe.”

The NBA is in the second season of a three-year jersey logo trial period.

Among the biggest NBA jersey ad deals to date, the Golden State Warriors jersey-logo pact with Rakuten is valued at $60 million over three years.

The Los Angeles Lakers signed with e-commerce firm Wish, a three-year deal that analysts put at $12-$14 million annually, similar in value to an alliance between the New York Knicks and SquareSpace.

The Cleveland Cavaliers signed with Goodyear for $30 million over three years. The Boston Celtics have a three-year deal with GE valued at $24 million.

According to Rudi Kalil, vp and GM, North America at Motorola. "All of us at Motorola are thrilled to see our iconic brand join forces with an iconic team, the Indiana Pacers.

“Now as the Pacers first-ever jersey patch partner, Motorola joins an organization whose combination of teamwork, passion and drive to continuously improve, has led them to tremendous success. This same championship formula is one we put into play at Motorola every day to win with our products, customers and employees, and is what makes this partnership so exciting."
