Thanks To MSG, The Bronx Is Burning Again
March 27, 2009: Mickey Mantle was not playing for the New York Yankees in 1977, but Mickey Mantle’s Restaurant in New York was the scene of a celeb-filled party to help MSG Network unveil The Bronx is Burning, the scripted mini-series that originally ran on ESPN in 2007. The MSG version, which will be presented beginning April 5 with limited commercial interruption by CadillacTriState.com, will come original "Summer of ’77" enhancements such as interviews with athletes and others who actually lived through the period. The event at Mantle’s on March 26 included three Yankees from the ’77 team - Bucky Dent, Mike Torrez and Fran Healy - current New York Giants star Justin Tuck and Giants legend Carl Banks, and a bevy of models (who were not even born in 1977). The trio of Yankees gave a glimpse into the types of stories that will be told on MSG to enhance The Bronx is Burning broadcast, such as after-hours partying and the fact that Yankees owner George Steinbrenner called Dent personally while Dent was still with the Chicago White Sox to ask him to play in New York. Others who will add their first-person stories to the broadcast include Spike Lee, John Turturro (who plays Billy Martin in the series), Reggie Jackson, Willie Randolph and Ron Guidry. As the telecast will be limited to MSG Network (which is owned by Cablevision), others can join in by seeing clips of the original content, including bonus footage and full-length interviews from Summer of ‘77, at www.MSG.com/summerof77. Video clips and other original content is accessible at CadillacTriState.com. Back to Home Page
