Fox Drives The Launch Of Sports 1 Network With An Extended Nascar TV Package

By Barry Janoff

August 2, 2013: On the heals of Nascar signing a game-changing long-term deal with NBC Universal in July, the racing circuit has inked a pact with Fox Sports Media Group that extends and enhances the multi-platform agreement that they unveiled this past October.

The extension adds two years and three races annually to Nascar's pact with Fox, meaning that both the Fox and NBC alliances, which begin in 2015, now reach to 2024, covering the Sprint Cup Series, the Nationwide Series and the Camping World Truck Series.

Financial terms of the Fox deal were not disclosed. Industry analysts said the Fox and NBC contracts combined exceed $8 billion. Fox will have coverage of the first half of the Nascar season and NBC Sports will have the second half.

Fox Sports said it would air nine Cup races on its network and the other seven on the Fox Sports 1 cable channel.

Fox Sports, which started to air live Nascar events in 2001, said it would launch its all-sports network, Fox Sports 1 on Aug. 17 with a broadcast of the Camping World Truck Series race from Michigan International Speedway as the network’s first live event.

“Fox Sports has been an outstanding partner for Nascar and we could not be more pleased with the additional commitment they are making to our sport and the fans,” Brian France, Nascar chairman and CEO, said in a statement. “Fox Sports has delivered for our fans a number of innovations that have changed how our sport is presented, and our entire industry has now come to expect excellence from Nascar on Fox. We believe this new agreement underscores our shared commitment to the fans over the next decade.”

Beginning in 2015, ESPN and Turner Sports will no longer cover live races sanctioned under the Nascar banner.

Fox Sports Media Group now has TV rights to 16 consecutive Sprint Cup Series races each year, beginning with the Daytona 500; the Nascar Sprint All-Star Race, the Sprint Unlimited, the Duel at Daytona, the entire Nascar Camping World Truck Series season and practice and qualifying for the Sprint Cup and Truck Series races that FSMG broadcasts.

NBC Universal said that seven of its 20 Nascar Sprint races would air on NBC on Sunday afternoons as a lead-in to the top-rated NFL Sunday Night Football. The other races will air on the NBC Sports Network.

According to Steve Herbst, vp-broadcasting and productions for Nascar, “It’s very gratifying to have a network like Fox and a parent company like News Corp make such a big investment in the sport of Nascar as they grow their properties [such as] Fox Sports 1 and all of their other multi-media platforms."

"Adding Nationwide to the 1,100 hours of motorsports already scheduled puts Fox Sports at the front of the race to serve motorsports fans in the U.S.”

Randy Freer and Eric Shanks, Fox Sports co-presidents and COOs, confirmed the impact that Nascar would have on the launch of Fox Sports 1. “The Nationwide Series is second only to Nascar Sprint Cup as the most-watched auto racing in the country," they said in a joint statement. "Fox Sports now owns the sport every weekend from Speedweeks and the Daytona 500 through June, and we expect these events to provide significant viewership for Fox Sports 1."

They said that the addition of Nationwide to the 1,100 hours of original motorsports programming already scheduled "clearly puts Fox Sports at the front of the race to serve motorsports fans in the U.S.”
