NBA Makes Preponderance Of Player Movement A Theme In 'Time To Rise'

By Barry Janoff

September 20, 2019: Since the last time the NBA officially took the court — Game 6 of the Finals with the Toronto Raptors defeating the Golden State Warriors — the list of players who have changed teams via free agency or trade or joined new teams as rookies reads like an All-Star Game roster.

They include Kawhi Leonard and Paul George (now with the Los Angeles Clippers), Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving (Brooklyn Nets), Russell Westbrook (Houston Rockets), Chris Paul (Oklahoma City Thunder), Anthony Davis and Dwight Howard (Los Angeles Lakers), D’Angelo Russell (Warriors), Kemba Walker (Boston Celtics), Jimmy Butler (Miami Heat), Al Horford (Philadelphia 76ers) and Zion Williamson (overall No. 1 draft pick by the New Orleans Pelicans).

Fully embracing the massive number of off-season moves that occurred, the NBA today unveiled its first spot of the season, “Time To Rise,” which proclaims, “The basketball world has been turned upside down. Now, it’s anyone’s game.”

Ironically, the NBA Board of Governors today unanimously approved stronger penalties for teams that tamper with players and/or employees under contract with other teams.

The spot includes live-action and animated shots of players including LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Davis, Irving, Leonard and Williamson.

Time to Rise” will be distributed in 12 languages. It will air across NBA media partners TNT, ESPN and NBA TV; as well as digital and social media.

This is part of a larger umbrella campaign, “This Is Why We Play.”

The NBA also said it would for the first time be part of New York Comic Con (Oct. 3-6).

Pre-season begins Oct. 4 (Rockets in China vs. Shanghai Sharks, NBA TV).

The 2019-20 season begins Oct. 22 as part of Kia NBA Tip-Off 2019 on TNT.

According to the NBA, “After a whirlwind off-season and free agency, the spot highlights the league’s bold new teams and teammates, and poses the question, ‘Who will rise?’”

In the spot, as we see players in action, a voiceover offers, “Some are looking to make a memorable entrance (as we see shots of Williamson in his Pelicans jersey and Leonard with the Clippers). Others want to prove they never left (a shot of Toronto's Lowery driving to the hoop).

“And everyone has a chance to reach new heights.”

“The time has finally come to see ‘Who will rise?’”

A new “China Games 2019 presented by Vivo” spot to follow will showcase the action and players for the Lakers and Nets, who will play in Shanghai (Oct. 10) and Shenzhen (Oct. 12), respectively, this pre-season.

The NBA will make its inaugural a presence on the floor at New York Comic Con, "allowing people to experience the excitement of the start of the season and these heroes firsthand by participating in live experiences including art installations, meet-and-greets and giveaways," according to the league.

Regarding tampering, the NBA Board of Governors said that in the “most egregious situations,” it is possible a team could be fined upward of $10 million, forfeit draft picks and have executives suspended and contracts voided.

“We need to ensure that we’re creating a culture of compliance in this league,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said during a media conference in New York on Friday.

“Our teams want to know that they’re competing on a level playing field and frankly don’t want to feel disadvantaged if they are adhering to our existing rules.”

One vital change to existing NBA rules is that “every franchise will have to annually certify that its executives did not contact or speak to free agents or their representatives before league rules allow.”

Separately, the NBA Board of Governors today approved new language in the NBA rule book that governs traveling violations.

“The revision will not change the substance of the rule but will help eliminate the gap between the rule as written and how it has been applied in NBA games,” according to the league..

"One of the most misunderstood rules in our game is how traveling is interpreted and appropriately called,” said Byron Spruell, NBA president, league operations, said via the NBA.

“Revising the language of certain areas of the rule is part of our three-pronged approach to address the uncertainty around traveling."
