NBA Sending Bucks, Hornets, Jordan To First Regular-Season Game In Paris

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

March 28, 2019:
The NBA continues to expand its global footprint, unveiling details for its first regular-season game to be played in Paris.

The NBA Paris Game 2020 Presented by beIN Sports — about which NBA commissioner Adam Silver "broke the news" during last month's All-Star Game in Charlotte — will see the Charlotte Hornets with majority owner Michael Jordan face the Milwaukee Bucks on Jan. 24, 2020, in the AccorHotels Arena.

According to Jordan, “The Charlotte Hornets are proud to have the opportunity to participate in the first NBA regular-season game in Paris.

“Having played in the pre-season in France during my career, I witnessed first-hand the passion the French fans have for NBA basketball. We are excited to bring our team to Paris for this history-making event.”

The game will be supported by a full roster of marketing partners, including presenting partner beIN Sports — also the  official broadcast partner of the NBA in France —  Beats, Nike, and Tissot.

Additional partners will be named.

Players from France currently in the NBA include Tony Parker of the Hornets, Rudy Gobert, Evan Fournier and Nicolas Batum.

“Our NBA Paris Game will showcase the continued global growth of basketball in one of the world’s greatest cities,” Silver said via the league.

“With France leading a record number of players from Europe in the (NBA), we look forward to bringing together basketball fans from across the continent for the NBA’s first regular-season game in Paris.”

The city will also be the site of the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Marketing support for the Paris game will include on-air, digital, social media, banners adorning the Hotel de Ville, branded buses and bespoke content across NBA and beIN Sports digital channels.

In addition to the on-court action, the NBA Paris Game 2020 Presented by beIN Sports will feature a variety of interactive fan activities, NBA Cares community outreach initiatives and Jr. NBA basketball programming "that will bring the NBA experience to fans in Paris," according to the league.

The NBA’s presence in France spans more than 35 years, with NBA games and programming on-the-air in France since the 1984-85 season.

However, the league has not played in Paris for a number of years because what used to be Bercy Arena was being renovated and upgraded, now known as AccorHotels Arena.

The NBA’s previous Paris appearance was a pre-season game in 2010 between the New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves.

The NBA Paris Game 2020 Presented by beIN Sports will be the Hornets’ second game in Paris, having played a pre-season game there in 1994 against the Golden State Warriors.

“Our NBA Paris Game will showcase the continued global growth of basketball in one of the world’s greatest cities."

The Bucks, led by MVP candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo, will be playing their first game in France, but the team previously played a regular-season game in London in 2015.

“On behalf of my teammates, we’re very excited for the chance to represent Milwaukee and the Bucks on the world stage,” said Antetokounmpo via the team.

“The opportunity to play in the first-ever regular season game in Paris is truly an honor, and as an international player, I’m grateful to the NBA for continuing to grow the game of basketball across the globe.”

Added Bucks co-owner Wes Edens, “We are honored to be selected to play in the NBA’s first-ever regular season game in Paris.

“Playing in one of the great cities in Europe continues our goal to extend the global brand of the Bucks. We will be proud to represent Milwaukee and Wisconsin in Paris and we thank the NBA for this exciting opportunity.”
