Milwaukee Bucks Ride With Harley-Davidson For NBA Jersey Sponsorship Alliance

August 10, 2017: Calling it "a perfect fit for Harley-Davidson and the Bucks," the iconic motorcycle company has signed a multi-layer deal with the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks, including the team’s first jersey logo patch.

The Bucks become the 12th NBA team with a jersey patch deal, a move that was approved  by the NBA Board of Governors in April 2016 as part of a three-year pilot program.

The alliance was unveiled in the Harley-Davidson Museum in downtown Milwaukee, which also will host a celebration party this evening.

The alliance came with a promo spot, "Bucks x Harley-Davidson: We Build," that focuses on the history of both Harely-Davidson and the Bucks, including the team’s NBA championship in 1970-71 when they were led by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Oscar Robertson.

Additional marketing support will appear as the NBA season approaches.

Harley-Davidson said the jersey patch "has the potential to receive over two billion impressions annually globally across the Bucks and NBA broadcast, video and digital platforms."

Harley-Davidson was founded in Milwaukee in 1903.

The Bucks joined the NBA as an expansion team in 1968.

Financial terms of the alliance were not shared.

Most of the logo patch deals unveiled to date have been in the $5-$8 million range annually, coinciding with Nike’s first season as the NBA’s official on-court uniform supplier (taking over from adidas).

However, a recent deal signed between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Goodyear could top $10 million, according to industry analysts.

The NBA champion Golden State Warriors, which have not yet signed a jersey patch deal, were said to be asking $15-$20 million.

All patches will be 2.5 x 2.5 on the left side, with a Nike Swoosh logo on the right side, with Nike taking over as the league's official on-court uniform provider.

The Charlotte Hornets will wear a Nike division Jordan Brand as the team is majority owned by Michael Jordan.

According to Sean Cummings, svp-global demand for Harley-Davidson, “We’ve been part of the fabric of this community since 1903 so it’s only natural that our brand is woven into the fabric of the Bucks jerseys.

"At Harley, our goal is to grow the sport of motorcycling across the country and around the world while building the next generation of riders."

Cummings said that the alliance with the Bucks "not only unites two of the world’s favorite sports, it activates our brand in relevant ways to new, young adult audiences across the U.S. and around the world in over 200 countries and territories."

Teams with jersey patch deals also include Boston Celtics (GE), Brooklyn Nets (Infor), Cleveland Cavaliers (Goodyear), Denver Nuggets (Western Union) Detroit Pistons (Flagstaff Bank), Minnesota Timberwolves (Fitbit), Orlando Magic (Disney World), Philadelphia 76ers (StubHub), Sacramento Kings (Blue Diamond), Toronto Raptors (Sun Life) and the Utah Jazz (Qualtrics).

"It’s a perfect fit for Harley-Davidson and the Bucks, two international brands with deep Milwaukee roots, to join together through this partnership," Matt Pazaras, svp-business development and strategy for the Bucks, said during the unveiling.

"Harley evokes as much passion among its riders as the Bucks do for our fans. And with that passion, along with its iconic logo and what it represents, Harley is the coolest brand for our players to sport during games."
