Nothing But Net Gains: NBA Sets Marks In Attendance, Merch Sales, Social Media

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

April 11, 2019: The dust from the 2018-19 NBA season will not settle for some time, but the league already has clarity on how fans viewed the year.

Attendance for the 2018-19 NBA regular season was 21,964,447, fourth best all-time.

The league also set the all-time record for total sold-out games for the fifth consecutive year — 760 — while achieving 95% or more of arena capacity for the second consecutive year and second time in NBA history.

The NBA said with that the opening of Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee and other venue changes, this past season's attendance numbers had even more impact.

“Coming off four straight seasons of total attendance records, the overall league attendance of 21,964,447 was even with last year when factoring in arena capacity reductions from new arenas and building renovations.

“These arena enhancements resulted in more than 141,000 fewer available seats from last season," according to the NBA.

Even with the arena capacity reductions, this year’s total attendance trailed only last year’s all-time record total (22,124,559), 2016-17 (21,997,412) and 2015-16 (21,972,129).

People bought more NBA merchandise, as well.

For the third consecutive year, NBAStore.com established a record for sales during the regular season, with overall sales up 10% over the 2017-18 season, according to the league.

Sales were aided in no small part by the move of LeBron James from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Los Angeles Lakers.

The NBA said it established new records across social media this season with 918 million actions (+14%) and 11.5 billion total video views (+5%), breaking last year’s marks.

Overall, the NBA now has more than 1.6 billion likes and followers combined across all league, team, and player social platforms worldwide.

NBA League Pass also set a record for global digital subscriptions, +21% over last season’s mark.

This season, NBA League Pass introduced a variety of offerings, including options to purchase a single game at reduced prices after each quarter and the launch of NBA 10-Minute Pass, which provides ten minutes of real-time access to NBA League Pass (for 99¢).

One more record: 27,955 total three-pointers were made throughout the 2018-19 regular season, a new NBA mark.

And another: 13 different players scored 50 points or more in a game during the 2018-19 regular season, another NBA record.

The previous record for total three-pointers was 25,807, set in 2017-18.

The previous record for players with at least one 50-point game was ten, set in 2016-17 and matched in 2017-18, according to the league.
