Christmas In August: NBA Unveils Opening Week, Xmas, International Schedule

Special to NYSportsJournalism.com

August 10, 2017: For those fans who have been going through NBA withdrawal, the league has a present for you: The opening week and Christmas Day schedule for the 2017-18 season.

With the league looking to reduce the number of back-to-back games and lighten the travel schedule, this year marks the earliest start to an NBA season since the 1980-81 campaign tipped off on Oct. 10, 1980.

The league’s 72nd season will begin on Tuesday, Oct. 17 with a doubleheader on TNT.

The first four days of the season — Oct. 17-20 — will feature 14 different teams playing eight national TV games as part of Kia NBA Tip-Off 2017, with TNT and ESPN airing two doubleheaders each. (See full schedule below.)

On Oct. 17, the Boston Celtics at Cleveland Cavaliers (8 PM ET TNT) will be the first regular season game with the NBA’s new Nike uniforms and jersey ad patches, Boston wearing GE and Cleveland with Goodyear.

The complete 2017-18 regular-season schedule, which is being finalized, will be released next week.

The NBA will feature five games on Christmas Day (Monday, Dec. 25) for the 10th consecutive year. This marks the 16th consecutive season of day-long NBA action on Christmas.

For the first time, ABC will televise three games on the holiday. The two other games will be on ESPN and TNT. (See full schedule below.)

For the first time since 2006, a NBA Christmas game will coincide with ESPN’s Monday Night Football.

The 2017 season finale of Monday Night Football on ESPN is scheduled to see the Philadelphia Eagles host the Oakland Raiders.

Among other noteworthy games, NBA Mexico City Games 2017 will feature the Brooklyn Nets playing regular-season games against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Dec. 7 and the Miami Heat on Dec. 9, both in the Arena Ciudad de Mexico.

NBA Mexico City Games 2017 culminates the 25th anniversary celebration of the first NBA game in Mexico and marks the 25th and 26th games in Mexico since 1992, the most NBA games held in any country outside the U.S. and Canada.

NBA London Game 2018 will see the Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics playing a regular-season game in The O2 on Thursday, Jan. 11.  The game marks the league’s eighth regular season playing in London.

According to London Mayor Sadiq Khan, "I am delighted the NBA continues to bring the world’s best basketball to our great city in what has now become a well-established and eagerly anticipated event on London’s sporting calendar.

"I know Londoners will be thrilled to see the Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics up close at our world-famous O2.  I am determined to make sure London remains the sporting capital of the world, and a key part of that is bringing major sports events here.

"It is also important that those major events provide important community benefits, which the NBA does so well.  I look forward to welcoming visitors from the UK, Europe and across the globe and showing once again that London is open," said Khan.
