En Route To Paris, NBA Shares All-Star Game Details On Fan Vote, Roster Draft

By Barry Janoff

January 17, 2019: The NBA office in New York has released the third fans vote totals for the 2019 All-Star Game and details for the All-Star Game roster draft, but the big news came from London.

LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers continues to lead the Western Conference — and all players — with 3,770,807 votes, while the Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo remains atop the Eastern Conference with 3,626,909 votes in All-Star Game Voting 2019 presented by Google.

Meanwhile, in London, where the New York Knicks played the Washington Wizards in The O2 on Thursday (Jan. 17) — the ninth NBA regular-season game in the U.K. — the league said it was close to finalizing details for a 2020 regular-season game in Paris.

"I was told not to make an announcement today, but it’s something we’re working on very closely — to organize a regular season game in Paris next season,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in London during a pre-game media conference.

“France has historically been a terrific make for the NBA. We have several players from France. We’ve played many exhibition games in Paris over the years. It will continue to be an important market.”

Silver said the league had not played in Paris for a number of years because what used to be Bercy Arena was being renovated and upgraded, now known as AccorHotels Arena.

The NBA’s previous Paris appearance was a pre-season game in 2010 between the Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves.

Although the game and details were yet to be finalized, Silver said, “We’re looking forward to coming back to Paris.”

Hoops will play a bigger role in Paris when it hosts the 2024 Summer Olympics.

In All-Star Game voting, if unchanged, James and Antetokounmpo would be captains for their respective conferences.

The captains will be the All-Star starter from each conference who receives the most fan votes in his conference.

The 2019 NBA All-Star Draft will be televised by TNT Feb. 7.

TNT will announce the NBA All-Star Game starters, including the two team captains, Jan. 24 during the TNT NBA Tip-Off pre-game show

The network will unveil the reserves — seven players from each conference — as selected by NBA head coaches, on Jan. 31 during NBA Tip-Off.

Fans account for 50% of the vote to determine the ten starters (five players from each conference) for the 2019 NBA All-Star Game.

All current NBA players and a media panel each account for 25% of the vote,

In the fan totals released today, James in the West is followed by:

• Luka Dončić Dallas Mavericks 3,301,825
• Stephen Curry Golden State Warriors 2,979,080
• Derrick Rose Minnesota Timberwolves 2,712,938

• Anthony Davis New Orleans Pelicans 2,091,770
• Russell Westbrook Thunder 2,090,432
• Steven Adams Thunder 1,483,223

In the East, Antetokounmpo is followed by:

• Kyrie Irving Boston Celtics 3,187,015

• Joel Embiid Philadelphia 76ers 2,292,511

• Ben Simmons Sixers 941,368
• Jayson Tatum Celtics 826,177
• Victor Oladipo Indiana Pacers 778,983
