NBA, Sprint, Partners Hit The Net, Social Media With 2014 All-Star Game Balloting

By Barry Janoff

November 15, 2013: If it's November and the leaves are falling and the days are shortening, it must be time for the annual event that people around the country anxiously anticipate: Voting for the NBA All-Star Team.

The NBA and Sprint officially unveiled NBA All-Star Balloting 2014 on Friday (Nov. 15)  during a special event in New Orleans, where the game and surrounding events will be hosted in February.

The NBA All-Star ballot features 120 players — 60 each from the Eastern and Western conferences — with 36 front court players and 24 back court players from each conference comprising the list. (The center position has been eliminated.)

Voters are directed to select three front court players and two back court players from each conference. People can vote for up to ten different players per day. See the full list here.

Voting is being tied into an NBA All-Star Sweepstakes, offering a trip to the game and events in New Orleans. (Details here.)

The balloting launch was hosted by the New Orleans Pelicans and overseen by All-Star Game co-chairs Avery Johnson (former NBA player and head coach, now an analyst on ESPN) and Rita Benson LeBlanc, vice-chairman for the Pelicans and the NFL's New Orleans Saints.

According to LeBlanc, “In addition to the events of the weekend, the economic impact and international spotlight on New Orleans are incredible opportunities for the city and region. We look forward to having basketball fans locally and from around the world visit New Orleans for All-Star Weekend and enjoy everything that the City and newly-renovated New Orleans Arena have to offer.”

The league said that the 120 players on the ballot were selected by a panel of media who regularly cover the NBA: Greg Anthony (NBA Digital), Mary Schmitt Boyer (Cleveland Plain Dealer/PBWA), Zach Lowe (Grantland), and John Reid (New Orleans Times Picayune).

The NBA has established a ballot site on its home Web page. Also, for the second year, people can vote via social media networks, including Facebook, Twitter and, for the first time, Instagram.

NBA fans can also access the ballot and vote through the NBA Game Time and NBA Game Time from Sprint applications, available on Android and iOS.

Balloting is being conducted in 11 languages through SMS voting by texting the player's last name to 6-9-6-2-2 ("MYNBA") or by visiting NBA.com/asb on any wireless device.  (Message and data rates may apply.) The international voting also includes Sina Weibo and Tencent Microblog in China.

In addition, NBA teams have established mini-sites on their respective home Web pages to feature their own players. The Golden State Warriors, for example, are touting their league-high six players on the ballot, including Stephen Curry, Andre Iguodala, Klay Thompson, Harrison Barnes, Andrew Bogut and David Lee.

Balloting concludes on Jan. 20, 2014. Starters will be announced live on TNT on Jan. 23, during a special one-hour edition of TNT NBA Tip-Off presented by Autotrader.com, with Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O'Neal and Kenny Smith.

The 63rd NBA All-Star Game will be telecast on TNT from New Orleans Arena on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014. Add in game coverage on ESPN Radio and the event will collectively reach fans in 215 countries and territories in more than 40 languages.

"In addition to the events of the weekend, the economic impact and international spotlight on New Orleans are incredible opportunities for the city and region."

State Farm All-Star Saturday Night will feature Sears Shooting Stars, Taco Bell Skills Challenge, Foot Locker Three-Point Contest and the Sprite Slam Dunk.

Other events at NBA All-Star 2014 will include the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge, Sprint NBA All-Star Celebrity Game and NBA All-Star Jam Session.

The 2015 NBA All-Star Game is scheduled for New York, with the New York Knicks and Madison Square Garden hosting the game and the Brooklyn Nets and Barclays Center designated as site for All-Star Saturday Night and other events.

The 2016 All-Star Game will be held in Toronto and hosted by the Raptors.
