NBA Scores Another Jersey Patch Deal As Biofreeze Builds Roster With Blazers, Lillard
By Barry Janoff
September 19, 2018: Sloane Stephens, Shaun White and marathon runner Sarah Sellers already endorse it, as do teams including the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Now, Biofreeze is making its first foray onto NBA jerseys.
Parent company Performance Health has signed a multi-year pact with the Portland Trail Blazers for marketing activation to include a Biofreeze logo on the front of team jerseys.
The Trail Blazers are the 24th NBA team with a jersey ad deal.
Biofreeze has also signed a separate multi-year endorsement deal with Trail Blazers All-Star guard Damian Lillard, who will be featured in marketing for the product along the lines of the spot done with tennis star Stephens (pictured below).
Financial terms of the deals were not shared.
The average value of the previous NBA jersey-patch deals is about $9 million, per industry analysts.
The deal with the Trail Blazers comes a week after Biofreeze signed a three-year deal to become the “official external pain reliever” for the TCS New York City Marathon and the New York Road Runners Five Borough Series.
The brand is also title sponsor for the Biofreeze San Francisco Marathon and a partner with the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
Performance Health said the jersey patch component is part of a “comprehensive partnership program designed to strengthen the tevam’s performance on the court and positively impact the Portland community.”
“We’ve found the perfect partner in Performance Health and we look forward to having them be a part of Rip City for many years to come,” Chris McGowan, Trail Blazers president and CEO, said via the team.
“Performance Health and Biofreeze share our same commitment to both growing and sustaining healthy, active communities in Oregon, Southwest Washington and the Pacific Northwest region.”
Performance Health is a global leader in rehab, recovery and sports performance. Biofreeze is an external product used to relive sore muscles, back aches and sore joints.
Performance Health is headquartered in Warrenville, Ill. Biofreeze is based out of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
In addition to the jersey logo, Biofreeze will have presence on other Trail Blazer equipment, in and around the team’s Moda Center home arena and through media support.
In 2019, the Biofreeze logo will also appear on the Trail Blazers jerseys during NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
Marketing comes with the tag line: The secret weapon of athletes, clinical professionals and now you.
According to Michael McGoohan, CMO for Performance Health, “Biofreeze’s mission is to help people overcome pain and perform at their personal best — everyone from (Trail Blazers All-Star guard) Damian Lillard to the everyday active person in Portland.
“This partnership is an excellent fit for Biofreeze and we are excited to support the Trail Blazers and Rip City for many years to come.”
The NBA jersey logo program began last season as part of a three-year trial.
Among the biggest financial deals, the Golden State Warriors jersey-logo pact with Rakuten is valued at $60 million over three years.
The Los Angeles Lakers signed with e-commerce firm Wish, a three-year deal that analysts put at $12-$14 million annually, similar in value to an alliance between the New York Knicks and SquareSpace.
The Cleveland Cavaliers signed with Goodyear for $30 million over three years. The Boston Celtics have a three-year deal with GE valued at $24 million.
