• China-based e-commerce giant Alibaba said it set a sales record on Singles Day, 11-11 — aka  the Double 11 shopping festival, “the world’s largest 24-hour shopping event" — with sales across Alibaba’s shopping platforms at $38.3 billion involving more than 200,000 brands. That exceeded last year’s record of nearly $30.5 billion. Alibaba also said that in its first hour, it generated an estimated $13 billion in sales. By comparison, in 2018, Black Friday sales were $6.2 billion, and Cyber Monday sales reached $7.9 billion, according to Forbes.

• Volcom has signed a deal to become the official apparel sponsor for the U.S. Snowboard Team. Volcom, a part of Authentic Brands Group, replaces Burton, which had been the apparel supplier for the group for the past four Winter Olympics. Financial terms of the deal, which runs through the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, were not shared.

• NBC’s Sunday Night Football on Nov. 10 became the decade’s (2010-19) only primetime series to average 20 million-plus viewers for 100 different broadcasts. American Ido is second with 69. The Minnesota Vikings’ 28-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys averaged a Total Audience Delivery of 23.5 million viewers across NBC TV, NBC Sports Digital and NFL Digital platforms.

• CBS Sports said its coverage of the SEC on CBS with No. 2 ranked LSU beating No. 3 ranked Alabama, 46-41, on Nov. 9  “delivered a massive audience, had an average of 16.636 million viewers and scoring a fast national household rating/share of a 9.7/24 . . . the  highest-rated regular-season college football game (excluding Conference Championships) on any network in eight years.

• Calling it the company’s biggest brand launch in more than a decade, Coca-Cola North America has unveiled Aha sparkling water, eyeing a March 2020 drop at retail. “As the largest and fastest-growing part of the water business, mainstream flavored sparkling water is a segment we know we must double-down on,” Celina Li, vp-water, Coca-Cola North America, said via the company. “Aha is our big-bet brand in this big-bet category.” Full story here.

NBA Nation 2013: Hoops And Hype, Chocolate Thunder, Sprint And Sprite

May 20, 2013: What tours the country, includes interesting events for hoops fans and sports fans alike and offers the opportunity to meet the likes of NBA icon Darryl Dawkins, current league up-and-coming stars and the Warrior Girls and the Laker Girls.

It is NBA Nation presented by Sprint, the league's mobile basketball playground, which is scheduled to begin its eighth summer tour on May 25 and visit eight cities through mid-July. Dribble to Stop Diabetes (a partnership among the NBA, Sanofi US and the American Diabetes Assn.) and Sprite are associate partners of NBA Nation presented by Sprint.

According to the league, NBA Nation presented by Sprint is a 20,000 square foot operation that includes full and half courts, free interactive basketball activities and autograph signings by Dawkins, NBA players and entertainers.

NBA Nation presented by Sprint is scheduled to travel more than 10,000 miles and make stops in San Francisco (Carnaval, May 25-26), Los Angeles (Universal CityWalk, June 1-2, Charlotte (Taste of Charlotte, June 7-9), Chicago (Taste of Randolph, June 15-16(, Washington D.C.(Safeway Barbecue Battle, June 22-23), East Rutherford (State Fair Meadowlands, June 28-30), Philadelphia (Wawa Welcome America! Taste of Philadelphia, July 5-7) and Dallas (Taste of Dallas, July 12-14).

Among the sponsored events, the Sprint Unlimited NBA Experience offers the Kevin Durant Unlimited Free Throw Competition and the Steve Nash Fast Break Challenge, offering the opportunity to win a new Sprint phone and other prizes; Sprite’s Slam Dunk Showdown, where people at each stop can display their best dunks before a panel of judges (including Dawkins), with one winner from each city receiving a $2,500 and the opportunity to compete in the championship event at NBA All-Star 2014 to win $10,000; and the Dribble to Stop Diabetes tent can participate in a pop-a-shot challenge, photo opportunities and a chance to win exclusive prizes while learning more about how to help stop diabetes.

According to Dawkins, "You can always visit Charming Chocolate, but other great legends show up on the tour . . . and current day players will show up for sure. NBA Nation does it right, we do it pure. Young talent in the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest bring their very best. What is left over, we call that a mess. Hanging with the sponsors, like Sprint, get up to date on the latest tech. Don't wear a suit, you will get some lint."

Dawkiins also named a dunk for the following tour stops:

Los Angeles: Layin' it back LA, where the talent is always up to par.
Charlotte: Hottest stop on the tour, it’s always 102 for sure.
Chicago: No sand in your teeth, it could get gritty, come out to Chi-town, it will get windy.
Washington D.C.: DC . . . where you can ride a llama or see Obama, hanging with me.
East Rutherford: The city that is growing and people not knowing, the lights are glowing, Nation’s still going.
Philadelphia: Don't stop to look at the morning Dove, come to Philadelphia to see what you’re made of, cause it’s the sure enough city of brotherly love.
Dallas: Dazzling Dallas where they do ribs right, up all morning and still all night.
