NBC Set To Air 120+ Hours Of Winter Olympic Coverage On Cable

Special to NYSportsJournalism.com

November 4, 2013: With just over 90 days to go until the 2014 Winter Olympics, NBCUniversal has unveiled its plan to air more than 120 hours of live coverage via cable networks including CNBC, MSNBC, and USA Network.

NBC also confirmed it would, for the first time, launch its primetime coverage of the Sochi Olympics on Thursday, Feb. 6, one night before the broadcast network provides its traditional coverage of the Opening Ceremony.

The Winter Games will run through Feb. 23.

“Our recent Olympic coverage has clearly demonstrated that the viewer’s appetite for Olympic content continues to grow,” Mark Lazarus, chairman for the NBC Sports Group, said earlier this year. “Due to the new events, it’s our pleasure to provide an 18th night of prime time coverage, a first in Olympic history that will benefit viewers, advertisers, affiliates and all of our Olympic constituents.”

The prime time broadcast on Feb. 6 is scheduled to include competition in men's and women's snowboard slope-style (including two-time gold medal winner Shaun White, team figure skating (making its Olympic debut) and women’s freestyle moguls.

“Our recent Olympic coverage has clearly demonstrated that the viewer’s appetite for Olympic content continues to grow."

According to NBCUniversal, CNBC would have 36 hours of coverage, MSNBC would have 45 hours (including hockey and curling and USA Network would air 43 hours of live programming (including three Team Canada men’s hockey games).

NBCUniversal recently re-launched its NBCOlympics.com Web site. For the first time during the Winter Games, all competition across all 15 sports, including each medal-winning performance in all 98 events, will be live streamed on NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports Live Extra app.

The site will also feature exclusive content, real-time results, medal standings, event highlights and analysis, athlete interviews and profiles, and rewinds of all event coverage.
