NCAA: President Emmert Plans To End His 12-Year Tenure By June 2023

April 26, 2022: NCAA Board of Governors chair John DeGioia said today that, by mutual agreement with the board, Mark Emmert would be stepping down as NCAA president.
He will continue to serve in his role “until a new president is selected and in place or until June 30, 2023.”
Emmert has been NCAA president since November 2010.
"Throughout my tenure I've emphasized the need to focus on the experience and priorities of student-athletes," Emmert said via the NCAA.
“I am extremely proud of the work of the Association over the last 12 years and especially pleased with the hard work and dedication of the national office staff here in Indianapolis."
The move comes as student-athletes are gaining more independence, fame and income due to the Name, Image and Likeness platform approved by the NCAA last year.
It also comes after the NCAA approved a new constitution in January and effective Aug. 1 that gives move power to college and university athletic committees, departments and student-athletes while reducing its own authority.
According to the NCAA, “More than 1,000 NCAA members participated in the (January) vote, with 801 voting in favor of the new constitution that, among other changes, provides significant authority to the three divisions to reorganize and restructure."
The NCAA said that marks the "first major constitution revision since 1997, when each division was provided a high level of autonomy."
"This is an important day in college athletics as we continue to evolve to better meet the needs of our student-athletes," Emmert said at the time. "I applaud the work of the Constitution Committee and the entire membership for setting a sustainable course for college sports for decades to come."
"With the significant transitions underway within college sports, the timing of this decision provides the Association with consistent leadership during the coming months plus the opportunity to consider what will be the future role of the president," DeGioia said today via the NCAA board.
"It also allows for the selection and recruitment of the next president without disruption."
