December 1, 2016: The NCAA likes to plan ahead, well ahead, as evidenced by its selection in early November of New Orleans as the host city for the 2022 Men’s Basketball Div. I host city.
Today, the NCAA unveiled the official logo for the 2018 Final Four, scheduled to take place in San Antonio’s Alamodome, March 29-April 2, 2018.
This will be San Antonio’s fourth time hosting the Final Four, but the first time since 2008. The other years were 1998 and 2004.
The 2018 NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Final Four is scheduled for March 30 and April 1 in the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
The advanced planning, in this case some 18 months out, gives all parities involved access to official logos and other NCAA marks to be used in conjunction with marketing, sponsorship deals and other activation.
The San Antonio Local Organizing Committee, which is working with the NCAA on the event, said the logo and related marks would be used to not only support the Final Four but the city’s 2018 Tricentennial Celebration as well.
"Today’s logo unveiling for the 2018 Final Four is another reminder for the incredible level of enthusiasm this community has for the event," Dan Gavitt, vp-NCAA men’s basketball championships, said during a media event in San Antonio.
"It’s evident that the Final Four has such a lasting impact on the host city. We’re excited to bring the Final Four back to San Antonio, and we’re grateful to the people of this beautiful city for the effort they put forth to make the games, the ancillary events and community initiatives so memorable for all those involved.," said Gavitt.
San Antonio Sports, the city’s non-profit sports commission involved in attracting sports events to the region, said that its "I Play! After-School" program would add basketball to its curriculum as a legacy of the 2018 Final Four.
Jenny Carnes, SALOC executive director; said that SALOC would seek more than 3,500 volunteers to help stage the 2018 Men’s Final Four. (Details here.)
"The Alamo City has been truly blessed by the partnership formed with the NCAA," Pat Frost, chairman for SALOC, said during the media event to unveil the Final Four logo. "Its basketball championships have brought millions of dollars to our community, helped our city shine in the national spotlight and provided countless opportunities for our youth to reap the benefits of hosting a Final Four."
The NCAA initiated its play-it-forward strategy for the Final Four in 2014, when it named future sites for 2017-2021. Dan Gavitt, vp-NCAA men’s basketball championships, said that process would continue next year with the 2023, 2024 and 2025 Men's Final Four locations scheduled to be named in the summer of 2018.
NCAA corporate champions currently include AT&T, Capital One and Coca-Cola.
Corporate partners include Allstate, Amazon Echo, Microsoft’s Bing, Buffalo Wild Wings, Buick, Enterprise, Infiniti, Lowe’s. LG, nabisco, Northwest Mutual, Pizza Hut, Reese’s Unilever and Wendy’s.
