For NFL 100, Ads Tout Bud Light Platinum As ‘Official Beer For Thursday Night Football’

By Barry Janoff

September 5, 2019: For NFL 100, it’s Bud Light Knight vs. Bud Light Platinum Knight, no corn syrup vs. brewed for the night.

Anheuser-Busch InBev has unveiled a multi-platform campaign for the start of the NFL’s 100 season.

Bud Light — backed by the Bud Light Knight — is again the league’s official beer sponsor.

What was called “a refreshed” Bud Light Platinum (which has been around since 2012) and the new Bud Light Platinum Knight is now the “official beer of Thursday Night Football.”

According to the brewer, two product-focused spots — “Recline" and "Crispy” — “emphasize the crisp, refreshing taste of Bud Light, capped off by the Bud Knight out of his armor”

Both spots emphasize that “Bud Light is not brewed with corn syrup.”

The on-going claim comes as rival MillerCoors, which has been singled out by Anheuser-Busch in marketing as including corn syrup as an ingredient — a negative connotation in that high-fructose corn syrup used as a sweetener has been linked to obesity and related health problems — continues to refute the claim.

MillerCoors won a legal decision this past May in which U.S. District Court Judge William Conley, based in Madison, Wisc., ruled that Anheuser-Busch could not make those claims in marketing.

Earlier this week, Judge Conley ruled that Anheuser-Busch could no longer make the claim or use the text “No corn syrup” on its packaging.

Two 30-second spots for Bud Light Platinum — “Bud Knight Platinum" and "Roofed-Top Bar” — return to the land populated by the kingdom of Dilly Dilly characters, who are joined by a new character — Bud Knight Platinum.

There is no mention of corn syrup. Instead, a voiceover offers, “Bud Light Platinum. Brewed for the night.”

The Bud Light Platinum spots debut during NFL Kickoff, the others during Week 1 NFL games.

The company said that Bud Light Platinum packaging has been “refreshed with a new deep blue coloring, a slim can, and its 6% ABV and ‘Brewed for the Night’ emblazoned on the pack.”

“The NFL continuously offers an ideal platform to reach a huge beer drinking base, which is why we're excited to debut brand new creative that highlights Bud Light's taste and reintroduces Bud Light Platinum," Andy Goeler, vp-marketing, Bud Light, said via the brand.

In “Bud Knight Platinum,” the King and his court head out for the evening, but ditch the Bud Light Knight in favor of hanging out with the new and improved Bud Light Platinum Knight.

The reason: “The King has a lot of friends. Some are old and the others . . . new and decidedly more platinum.”

In “Roofed-Top Bar,” the King and crew head off to an outdoor, glitzy rooftop Bud Light Platinum party in the castle, but make a wrong turn and end up in the darkest side of the castle — perhaps misdirected on purpose by the previously rejected Bud Light Knight..

Two 15-secnd spots, “Recline” and “Crispy”, show a relaxed Bud Light Knight enjoying the product, with a voiceover offering, “Crisp taste. Brewed with no corn syrup.”

According to Goeler, “We love being able to bring Platinum into the medieval world and highlight our new, premium packaging, while also continuing to showcase Bud Light's quality ingredients and crisp taste during NFL games this season."

The 13-game Thursday Night Football presented by Bud Light Platinum schedule begins Sept. 12 exclusively on NFL Network, with the full schedule including 11 games on Fox to be simulcast on NFL Network and Amazon Prime Video plus another NFL Network exclusive game.
