Think Texas Big: NFL Builds Marketing, TV, Activation For ‘Most Ambitious Draft’ Ever

By Barry Janoff

March 21, 2018: Calling it “our most ambitious vision yet,” the NFL has shared marketing, broadcast and logistical details about the upcoming NFL Draft, April 26-28, in the Dallas Cowboy’s home AT&T Stadium, the first time the Draft will be held inside an NFL stadium.

Given that everything his bigger in Texas, and that AT&T Stadium holds in excess of 100,000, the NFL is going big with its three-day event.

Expanded coverage — on ESPN, ESPN2, ABC, ESPN Deportes, Fox and NFL Network — gives the NFL Draft its largest audience reach for the event and marks the first time that the entirety of the live three-day event will air on broadcast television.

The NFL has a new broadcast arrangement in which NFL Network and for the first time Fox would team to simulcast live coverage of Rounds 1-3 of the 2018 NFL Draft.

"The opportunity for Fox to help shape the stories that are told around such an energetic and optimistic time for NFL fans is definitely a place we want to be," Mark Silverman, president, Fox Sports National Networks, said in a statement. "Using Troy (Aikman) and Joel (Klatt), two of the best analysts in the business, serves the NFL Draft audience in a new and fresh way."

The league has also expanded its partnership with ESPN-ABC so that ESPN2 would supplement ESPN's coverage of Round 1 with a separate college-themed GameDay production in addition to a simulcast of ESPN's live coverage of Rounds 4-7 airing on ABC.

Leading into Round 1, ESPN said it would offer an unprecedented 26 consecutive hours of NFL Draft coverage, beginning Wednesday, April 25, with SportsCenter (6 PM ET). Other programs part of the marathon include ESPN Radio’s Golic and Wingo and NFL Live, which will originate from the NFL Draft Experience in Arlington.

“ESPN has presented the NFL Draft for nearly 40 years and we take great pride in finding new and exciting ways to continue to elevate and differentiate our coverage,” Burke Magnus, ESPN evp-programming and scheduling, said in a statement.

“The draft is the perfect intersection of college football and the NFL, so giving fans the opportunity to experience Round 1 through the lens of College GameDay makes perfect sense.”

The free NFL Draft Experience presented by Oikos Triple Zero is being built on the outdoor plazas of the AT&T Stadium, spanning the size of nearly 26 football fields.

Among the brands that will be part of the NFL Draft Experience are Aquafina, Bud Light, Campbell’s Danimals, DirecTV, FedEx, Ford, Hyundai, Marriott, Oikos Triple Zero, Pepsi, Skittles, Tostitos, Visa and Xfinity, as well as the American Heart Assn.

Live-streaming of the 2018 NFL Draft coverage will be available across devices (smartphone, PC, tablet and connected TVs) through the NFL app or NFL.com. People can also stream the live 2018 NFL Draft through Fox Sports and the ESPN App, available for subscribers of the networks' participating TV providers.

"The NFL Draft is a unique event on the NFL calendar where the promise and excitement of the future is universally felt among fans, players and clubs," Brian Rolapp, chief media and business officer for the NFL, said in a statement.

"Interest in the NFL Draft grows year after year, and we are excited for the opportunity to meet that demand with expanded draft coverage including a record six television networks, while deepening the relationship with our trusted broadcast partners ESPN and Fox.”

According to Peter O'Reilly. svp-events for the NFL, "The 2018 NFL Draft represents our most ambitious vision yet, and we are thrilled to take the event to another level this year for our fans, incoming players, and teams.

”By collaborating closely with the Dallas Cowboys and the Dallas Sports Commission, we are creating a record number of free experiences and enabling the largest live audience ever to view the NFL Draft,” said O’Reilly.

According to the league, more than 250,000 fans from all 50 states and the District of Columbia registered over the past three weeks for the chance to win free seated tickets inside the NFL Draft Theater, which will be built on the stadium's field.

That record-breaking number represents a 50% increase over last year and the highest sign-up total for any Draft event over the same time period, according to the NFL.

Among the new activations this year, all 32 teams will send “some of their most passionate fans” to sit in the "Inner Circle," an exclusive area for select fans to watch the 2018 NFL Draft from seats on the field.

Selection Square Driven by Hyundai will be located inside the NFL Draft Theater and feature team tables, where representatives from each club will make their Draft selections throughout the three days.

NFL Draft coverage simulcast on NFL Network and Fox will be produced by NFL Network and feature co-branding, as well as a mixed team of NFL Network and NFL on Fox on-air personalities.

Round 1: Thursday, April 26 8 PM ET NFL Network, Fox, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN Deportes; NFL Network,, Fox Sports and ESPN digital properties.

Rounds 2-3: Friday, April 27 7 PM ET NFL Network, Fox, ESPN/ESPN2; NFL Metwork, Fox Sports and ESPN digital properties.
