Sure Bet: Dallas Cowboys Become First NFL Team To Sign Casino Partnership

By Barry Janoff

September 6, 2018: Calling it the “first of its kind in the NFL,” the Dallas Cowboys have signed a deal naming WinStar World Casino and Resort as the official casino of the team.

The deal follows the Supreme Court ruling in May overturning the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, a ruling passed in 1992 prohibiting most states from authorizing betting on sports.

According to the Cowboys, an amendment just passed by league owners created the opportunity for casinos to obtain official partnerships with NFL teams.

In July, the NBA signed a deal naming MGM Resorts International as the official casino partner for the NBA and the WNBA.

The Cowboys deal was unveiled during a press conference today in Ford Center The Star, the team’s headquarters and practice facility in Frisco, Texas, attended by Cowboys owner, GM and president Jerry Jones and Jack Parkinson, GM of WinStar.

WinStar World Casino is located in Thackerville, OK, about 80 miles north of Dallas, and operated under the auspices of the Chickasaw Nation and Chickasaw Nation Gov. Bill Anoatubby.

Financial terms of the deal were not shared.

“This is a noteworthy day for the Dallas Cowboys, the NFL and certainly for our sport,” Jones said at the media conference. “The NFL has recently made it possible for us to do this partnership. This is the first time a casino has been granted the rights to have a partnership with an NFL team.

“We’re excited about that. We are excited about the future of gaming as it relates to the NFL.”

Jones said that “this is a dynamic that is going to increase interest in our game.”

The alliance allows WinStar to use the Cowboys logos and mark.

To that point, Jones pointed out the already existing tie between the Dallas Cowboys “Star” logo and the WinStar Casino name.

“It fits in a lot of ways. We are going to be a major part of the visibility of what WinStar has to offer.”

Jones said the NFL has been in the process of working through the nationwide recognition of how to approach gaming as far as the league is concerned.

“That is a process that could be months and years in the making. But I am excited that with this deal (the Cowboys) don’t have to wait years or months."

The alliance coincides with the start of the 2018 NFL season and comes a day after the American Gaming Assn. released a study showing that the NFL’s annual revenue “may increase by $2.3 billion a year due to widely available, legal, regulated sports betting,”

“The Dallas Cowboys take great pride in aligning themselves with the best brands in the world,” said Jones. “It is a privilege to stand shoulder to shoulder as partners with such a prominent entertainment brand like WinStar World Casino.”

WinStar sees the partnership going beyond football and sports betting.

“Hundreds of Chickasaws live in the Dallas area and the Dallas Cowboys are a vital part of the community,” Gov. Anoatubby said in a statement,

“While this partnership is a great business deal, that is only one of the reasons we are excited to be involved with the Dallas Cowboys and the Jones family. Jerry Jones is committed to enhancing the quality of life of Arlington youth and others in the community, which aligns closely with our mission to enhance the overall quality of life of the Chickasaw people”

When asked, Parkinson said that he was born in Zimbabwe, adding that he is now officially a Cowboys fan after this new deal.

“The Cowboys definitely cover some ground,” said Jones.

“Everybody knows the (Dallas Cowboys) star,” said Parkinson.

According to the new American Gaming Assn. report, greater fan engagement and viewership due to sports betting could boost the NFL's total annual revenue from media rights, sponsorships, merchandise and ticket sales by 13.4%, producing $1.75 billion in new revenue from increased consumption of the league's products.

Legal sports betting could help the NFL generate an additional $573 million in revenue as a result of spending by betting operators and data providers.

The AGA study projects that gaming operators "may spend $451 million on advertising, which would directly increase the league's rights fees by the same amount." An additional $92 million in sponsorship revenue and $30 million in data is also projected for the league and its teams.

The Cowboys are most valuable sports franchise in the world, valued at $4.8 billion, according to Forbes.
