NFL Gets Re-Carded With Visa, Extends, Enhances Alliance Thru 2025

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

January 29, 2019:
Visa, which has been a partner with the NFL since 1995, has extended its position as the league’s “official payment services technology partner” through the 2025 season.

Financial terms were not shared.

Visa has hit the ground running with activation during Super Bowl LIII — including Saquon Barkley and George Kittle on-location in the NFL Shop in Mercedes-Benz Stadium filming a series of digital shorts; and other stars of Visa’s NFL season commercial campaign who will “surprise shoppers and reprise their roles as contactless payments pros to help customers at the register.”

The extended deal includes new benefits for Visa card holders at NFL events and plans to collaborate on the first cashless Super Bowl in the future.

Super Bowl LIII will offer more than 30 cashless concessionaires throughout the stadium.

“Over the years, we have evolved our relationship with the NFL from a sponsorship to a partnership that provides invaluable payment experiences for fans,” Lynne Biggar, chief marketing and communications officer for Visa, said via the company.

“Looking ahead, we see a cashless future for NFL fans where events, including future Super Bowls, are digital creating a more secure and seamless payment environment for fans and concessionaires alike.”

Among those who have appeared in Visa NFL marketing this past season are Barkley, New York Giants teammate Eli Manning and New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

This is the NFL’s fourth major deal since, having also signed Caesar’s Entertainment as the league’s official casino partner, Lowe’s to fill the vacant home improvement category and Intuit as its official accounting software partner.

The league is also looking to sign a new auto partner with Hyundai concluding its deal after Super Bowl LIII.

Highlights of the renewed Visa partnership include preferred payment provider across NFL events domestically, including the Super Bowl, Pro Bowl, NFL Draft, and international games; and preferred payment method for ticket sales, concessions and merchandise at NFL Shops at all major global league events

At Super Bowl LIII, Visa said it would increase its presence at multiple NFL Shops leading up to and during the game, including in the stadium NFL Shop kiosks and two NFL Shops at the Super Bowl Experience in the Georgia World Congress Center.

Visa is activating a MVP checkout lane that encourages customers to tap to pay with contactless enabled devices (cards, mobile or wearables) to get in and out quickly.

Visa will host other activities on-site including an interactive augmented reality demo experience that will give fans the ability to simulate checkout by successfully kicking their items through virtual goal posts.

According to Renie Anderson, svp-partnerships, sponsorship and consumer products for the NFL, “Visa has been a trusted partner of the NFL since 1995 and we are excited to continue our work with them, especially in the area of implementing cashless capabilities at NFL events which will provide our fans faster, safer and more convenient digital payment options.”
