Prime Time: NFL Extends, Expands With Amazon For Fox 'Thursday Night Football'

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

April 26, 2018: Calling Amazon "a tremendous partner for Thursday Night Football,” the NFL has renewed and extended its alliance with the company’s  Amazon Prime Video to deliver live OTT digital stream games during the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

The NFL said that the platform would stream the 11 games of Thursday Night Football Presented by Bud Light and broadcast by Fox for the first time, also to be simulcast on NFL Network and distributed in Spanish on Fox Deportes.

The 13-game 2018 Thursday Night Football schedule also includes two NFL Network exclusive games.

Financial terms were not released.

The Thursday Night Football games would be made available to the more than 100 million Amazon Prime members worldwide in 200-plus countries and territories, on the Prime Video app for TVs, game consoles, and connected devices, which includes Amazon Fire TV, mobile devices and online.

Thursday Night Football games will also be available on Twitch, a division of Amazon.

The extension coincides with Amazon’s Q1 financial report released today (April 26).

Amazon said that net sales increased 43% to $51 billion compared with $35.7 billion inQ1 2017, and its profit had more than doubled to $1.6 billion during the quarter ending March 31.

Amazon also said its annual Prime membership fee is going up to $119 a year from $99, a 20% increase “due to higher costs to maintain the program” (shipping fees, etc).

New Prime members in the U.S. will be charged the higher fee starting May 11. Amazon said the last time it raised the annual fee was four years ago.

"Amazon was a tremendous partner for Thursday Night Football in 2017 and as we continue our mission of delivering NFL games to fans whether they watch on television or on digital platforms, we are excited to work with them again for the next two seasons,” Brian Rolapp, chief media and business officer for the NFL, said in a statement.

"Having over 100 million Amazon Prime members provides a massive platform to distribute Thursday Night Football digitally, not only to our fans in the United States but also around the world."

The NFL and Amazon aligned for distribution of ten Thursday Night Football games last season, which aired on CBS, NBC and NFL Network.

In January, Fox Sports signed a five-year deal for Thursday Night Football that includes games between Weeks 4-15 (excluding Thanksgiving night) to be broadcast on Fox, simulcast via NFL Network and distributed in Spanish on Fox Deportes.

The NFL and Amazon partnership also includes the Amazon Prime Original Series All or Nothing, produced by NFL Films. Season three of the docu-series  begins April 27 with All or Nothing: The Dallas Cowboys.

Amazon said Thursday Night Football on Prime Video would “provide members a unique viewing experience complete with interactive features that bring fans closer to the game.

In addition, the NFL and Amazon will collaborate on “NFL content opportunities and enhanced fan viewing experiences, including making the games available on Twitch’s interactive social video service.”

According to Jeff Blackburn, svp-business development & entertainment for Amazon, “Our customers love to stream football — last year, we successfully debuted NFL Thursday Night Football on Prime Video in the U.S. and around the world.

“We’re thrilled to continue our relationship with the NFL and offer Prime members another two seasons of Thursday Night Football.”
