NFL Sees Final Three For Super Bowl LII: Indianapolis, Minneapolis, New Orleans

By Barry Janoff

October 10, 2013: With Super Bowl XLVIII just five months away and venues for Super Bowl XLIX, Super Bowl L and Super Bowl LI confirmed, the NFL has set its play-it-forward sights (and sites) on Super Bowl XLII in 2018.

During a meeting of NFL owners on Wednesday in Washington, DC, the league heard presentations for Super Bowl LII from six cities: Dallas, Indianapolis, Miami, Minneapolis, New Orleans and Tampa.

Only half made the cut: Indianapolis, Minneapolis and New Orleans. The league is next scheduled to hear final bids and make its host city selection for SUper Bowl LII during an owners meeting in May 2014.

Indianapolis has hosted the game once, Super Bowl XLVI in 2012 in Lucas Oil Stadium. The location and venue received mostly rave reviews from the league and visitors.

“It proves that Indianapolis is really a unique city, being a medium-sized market in a colder market, without 80 degrees and beaches,” Jim Irsay, owner of the Indianapolis Colts, said in a statement regarding the city's place among the final three being considered for Super Bowl XLII.

Minneapolis was host to Super Bowl XXVI in 1992 when the game was played in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. If Minneapolis is selected, the game would be played in a closed-roof venue now under construction and scheduled to open for the 2016 NFL season (artist's rendition pictured).

New Orleans has hosted the Super Bowl ten times, tied for the most with South Florida, most recently Super Bowl XLVII this past February in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Superdome has been the Super Bowl host venue seven times, Tulane Stadium three times.

Super Bowl XLVIII will be played in MetLife Stadium, home to the New York Giants and Jets. It will be the first Super Bowl played in an open-air stadium located in the northern region of the U.S., and it's success or failure will be closely monitored by other cold-weather cities whose teams do not have domed stadiums with regards to future Super Bowl bids.

According to Mark Wilf, majority owner and president for the Minnesota Vikings, "This is a significant first step in bringing the world's marquee sporting event to Minnesota. With the outstanding hospitality community in Minneapolis-St. Paul and the opening of the new state-of-the-art stadium, this is a perfect fit. We look forward to working with state and local leaders to secure this major event in Minnesota."

South Florida was passed over for the third time, having also missed out when owners voted not to have Super Bowl L and Super Bowl LI — both of which were selected this past May — played in Sun Life Stadium, home of the Dolphins. The concern then and now is the NFL's desire to have major renovations done to Sun Life Stadium, which do not appear to be forthcoming.

South Florida last hosted the game in 2010 when Super Bowl XLIV was played there.

"We’re obviously disappointed that our effort to bring the Super Bowl back to South Florida wasn’t successful,” Tom Garfinkel, Miami Dolphins president and CEO, said in a statement. “We’ve had ten Super Bowls here because it’s an ideal market to host big events, but we’re now facing more intense competition from multiple modernized facilities. We will continue to work hard to attract big events — and their corresponding economic impact and job creation — to the state of Florida.”

"We’ve had ten Super Bowls here because it’s an ideal market to host big events, but we’re facing more intense competition from multiple modernized facilities."

Super Bowl XLV was played in 2011 what is now AT&T Stadium, the billion-dollar-plus home of the Dallas Cowboys located in Arlington, Texas. The area was hit by severe ice storms the week prior to the game, which made transportation and other logistics difficult. Although more than 103,000 were in attendance, an issue regarding more than 1,200 temporary seats that were not installed by game time impacted and the post-Super Bowl grading of the venue.

Super Bowl XLIX will be hosted by the Arizona Cardinals in the University of Phoenix Stadium in February 2016.

The historic Super Bowl L will be played in 2016 in Levi's Stadium, the new home of the San Francisco 49ers, which is scheduled to open for the 2014 NFL season.

Super Bowl LI will be played in Reliant Stadium, home to the Houston Texans, in February 2017.
