• Sacramento, California's capital city, has been awarded an MLS expansion team with Sacramento Republic FC becoming the league's 29th team and beginning play in MLS in 2022. The club will build a new, $300 million, 20,100-seat soccer stadium in the downtown Railyards District. 

• Octagon and the National Women’s Soccer League have signed a multi-tier consulting partnership, in which Octagon’s Global Media Rights Consulting and Marketing divisions will "advise the NWSL on its league media rights, sponsorship, and marketing." “The growth of the NWSL over the past six years has been tremendous, and the league, its teams and players show absolutely no sign of slowing down,” Christine Franklin, SVP, Marketing, Octagon, said via the firm.

• The Professional Baseball Agreement between MLB and minor league teams expires at the end of the 2020 season. But if a new MLB proposal were to become reality, more than three dozen cities with affiliated minor league teams will lose those teams a year from now and thousands of minor league players will be out of work as well. • Halloween this year is Oct. 31, and retailers, marketers and consumers are ready for another season of trick-or-treat. Total spend on Halloween 2019 is expected to reach $8.8 billion according to the National Retail Federation, Washington, DC. Full story here.

Jaguars Owner Khan Withdraws $790M Bid To Acquire Iconic Wembley Stadium

October 17, 2018: Businessman Shahid Khan, owner of the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, has decided to withdraw his $790 million offer to acquire iconic Wembley Stadium in London.

The offer was discussed on Oct. 11 and scheduled to be voted on Oct. 24 by the Football Association, the governing body of association football in England and some surrounding regions, which oversees Wembley Stadium.

The Football Association said it was not seeking other buyers for the venue.

According to Khan, he felt that his offer to purchase the venue would fall short.

"At this moment, following, following last week's FA Council hearing, it appears there is no definitive mandate to sell Wembley and my current proposal, subsequently, would earn the backing of only a slim majority of the FA Council, well short of the conclusive margin that the FA Chairman has required,” Khan said in a statement released through his PR firm.

"The intent of my efforts was, and is, to do right by everyone in a manner that strengthens the English game and brings people together, not divides them. Unfortunately, given where we are today, I've concluded that the outcome of a vote next week would be far from sufficient in expressing the broad support favored by the FA Chairman to sell Wembley Stadium,” said Khan.

The NFL has played games in Wembley Stadium as part of its International Series, since rebranded as the London Games, since 2007.

The most recent game there was this past Sunday, when an NFL London Games record 84,922 people saw the Seattle Seahawks defeat the Oakland Raiders. The next game is Sunday (Oct. 21) when the Tennessee Titans face the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Jaguars have played five games in the stadium, with the sixth upcoming on Oct. 28 against the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

Under a current deal, the Jaguars will also play there in both 2019 and 2020.

When Khan unveiled his plan to acquire Wembley, there was speculation that he would consider relocating the franchise from Jacksonville to London. Early reports also put the bid at closer to $1 billion.

After Khan withdrew his offer, the FA released its own statement.

“Earlier this year, The FA received an unsolicited official offer from Shahid Khan to buy Wembley Stadium. It was a very credible offer and was given very serious consideration.

Shahid Khan has informed us today that he will be withdrawing his offer to buy the stadium — and we fully respect his decision.

“Mr. Khan believed that his offer to buy Wembley Stadium would release funds to help improve community football facilities in England and that it would be well received by all football stakeholders.

“At a recent meeting with Mr. Khan he expressed to us that, without stronger support from within the game, his offer is being seen as more divisive than it was anticipated to be and has decided to withdraw his proposal.

“Wembley Stadium is an iconic venue that is revered around world and it will continue to thrive under the ownership and direction of The FA.”

As part of his statement, Khan hinted that a future bid might happen.

"The intent of my efforts was, and is, to do right by everyone in a manner that strengthens the English game and brings people together, not divides them."

"Until a time when it is evident there is an unmistakable directive from the FA to explore and close a sale, I am respectfully withdrawing my offer to purchase Wembley Stadium," said Khan.

Despite the bid withdrawal, the NFL will continue to play games in London as it seeks to grow its U.K. fan base. The last 14 games played in Wembley have averaged more than 84,000 attendance.

“We continue to be very excited by the growth of the NFL in the U.K.,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement last season. “The fans have demonstrated outstanding support and passion for the NFL over the past 11 seasons and we look forward to some great games in London this year."

The league said it has "developed new and stronger business partnerships and, according to internal research, has a U.K. fan base of more than 13 million, including close to four million avid fans."
