NFL Returning To London In 2018 With Seahawks, Eagles, Titans, Jaguars, Gruden

By Barry Janoff

January 11, 2018: The NFL may be in the midst of its 2017 post-season, but the league is already think London 2018.

The NFL has unveiled the six teams and three games to be played in the U.K. next season under the banner London Games presented by Subway, including a game in the new 61,000 seat stadium that will be home to the English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur.

The schedule includes Seattle Seahawks vs. Oakland Raiders (new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Oct. 14), Philadelphia Eagles vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (Wembley Stadium, Oct. 21 or Oct. 28) and Tennessee Titans vs. Los Angeles Chargers (Wembley Stadium, Oct. 21 or Oct. 28).

The final schedule, with kickoff times and TV schedules in the U.S., will be confirmed at a later date.

A fourth international game next season will see the Los Angeles Rams play in Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca against a team to be named.

The league has talked about having a franchise in London and possibly holding a Super Bowl there.

By the end of the 2018 season, the NFL will have played 24 regular-season games in London, with 29 of 32 teams having participated.

“We continue to be very excited by the growth of the NFL in the U.K.,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “The fans have demonstrated outstanding support and passion for the NFL over the past 11 seasons and we look forward to some great games in London this year."

The NFL and Tottenham Hotspur in 2015 reached an agreement for a minimum of two games per year to be played during a ten-year partnership, initially in the club’s Twickenham Stadium.

The new stadium, due to open this summer, will feature a retractable grass field with an artificial surface underneath that will be used for NFL games.

“The Raiders are a truly global brand and we look forward to hosting the first NFL game in Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium,” Raiders owner Mark Davis said in a statement.

According to Goodall, “A key feature of our success is playing in iconic, world-renowned venues like Wembley and Twickenham, and we look forward to playing in what will be another incredible setting for NFL football at Tottenham’s new stadium." (Artist's rendition pictured below.)

The league played one game a season in the U.K. from 2007-2012, added a second game in 2013 and a third in 2014. There were four games played there in each of the past two seasons.

The Jaguars will play in London for the sixth consecutive season.

The Raiders, with new head coach Jon Gruden, will mark the third-straight season and the fourth time in five years the team has hosted a regular-season international game. The Raiders played games in Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca in each of the last two seasons and made the team’s debut in London against the Miami Dolphins in 2014.

The Changers, then based in San Diego, played in London in 2008.

The Seahawks, Eagles and Titans are new to the London Series.

“Since we last visited London in 2008, the NFL’s popularity has continued to grow in the U.K.,” A.G. Spanos, Chargers president of business operations, said in a statement. "It was an honor to be part of the early wave of regular season games played abroad back then, and it is every bit the honor to represent the league in London this time around.

“We’re excited to introduce the Los Angeles Chargers brand, in person, to football fans in the U.K. this year, and to fans in our 2019 destination as well.”

Since 2007, when the New York Giants defeated the Miami Dolphins, 13-10, in front of 81,176 fans in Wembley, the NFL said that Sunday viewership in the U.K. of NFL games “has more than doubled and the Super Bowl audience has increased more than 75%.”

The league said it has "developed new and stronger business partnerships and, according to internal research, has a U.K. fan base of more than 13 million, including close to four million avid fans."

“This is another important year as we develop our plans for London and the U.K.,” according to Mark Waller, evp-international and events for the NFL.

“By playing games on three consecutive weeks we will learn a lot, both from the fans buying tickets and attending games, and from a logistics and organizational standpoint.”

Of the 21 games played in the U.K. since 2007, 15 have attracted crowds in excess of 81,000, with a high of 84,592 last September.

In addition to presenting sponsor Subway, NFL UK London marketing partners include Budweiser, Pepsi Max, Visa, Hyundai, Just For Men Hair Care, FedEx, Microsoft, Virgin Atlantic, Thomas Cook Sport, Bose, Heinz Yellow Mustard, Marriott and VisitTheUSA.com.

Of the 21 games played in the U.K. since 2007, 15 have attracted crowds in excess of 81,000, with a high of 84,592 last September when the Baltimore Ravens played the Jaguars.

According to London mayor Sadiq Khan, “London is the international home of the NFL and I am really excited to welcome the world’s best American football stars and their thousands of fans from around the globe back to our city.

“I’m delighted Tottenham Hotspur’s fantastic new stadium is joining the line-up of world-class sports arenas in our great city. Spurs’ new ground will stage one game in its first year of opening and in 2019 we look forward to going back to staging at least four NFL games in London.”
