En Route To Super Bowl LIV In Miami, NFL Playing Four In U.K., One In Mexico

By Barry Janoff

April 17, 2019: The NFL already knows that Super Bowl LIV is scheduled to be played in Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020. The team’s of course, won’t be known until late January.

However, the league unveiled its full regular-season schedule today, and named the teams that would play in its five international games — four in the U.K. and one in Mexico City.

The schedule for the 2019 International Series:

NFL UK

• Oct. 6: Chicago Bears v Oakland Raiders Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

• Oct. 13: Carolina Panthers v Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

• Oct. 27:  Cincinnati Bengals v Los Angeles Rams Wembley Stadium

• Nov. 3: Houston Texans v Jacksonville Jaguars Wembley Stadium

NFL Mexico

• Nov. 18: Kansas City Chiefs v Los Angeles Chargers Mexico City Estadio Azteca (ESPN Monday Night Football).

The Panthers and Texans are making their first U.K. trip.

Including the 2019 games, only the Green Bay Packers have not played a regular season game in the U.K.

To officially open the league's 100th anniversary season, the Packers will visit the Chicago Bears on Thursday, Sept. 5.

As one of the league's most history rivalries, the teams have faced each other 198 times since 1921 (when the Bears were the Chicago Staleys). Green Bay leads the series 97-95-6, including a split of two post-season games.

The New England Patriots begin defense of their Super Bowl LIII title on Sunday, Sept. 8 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Wembley Stadium has been hosting regular season contests in London since 2007.

On April 2, the first purpose-built NFL stadium to be constructed outside of the U.S. was officially opened.

The 62,000-seat, $1.3 billion Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will host NFL regular season games as part of a ten-year deal between the Premier League club and the NFL.

NFL UK games are presented by Subway.

The NFL Mexico City game is presented by Banorte.

NFL UK partners also include Anheuser-Busch (Budweiser), Bose, FedEx, GoUSATV, Just For Men Hair Care, Marriott Bovoy, Microsoft, Pepsi Max, Thomas Cook Sport and Virgin Atlantic.

Mexico partners also include Amazon Prime Video, FedEx, Marriott Courtyard, Visa and Visit Mexico.

The 2018 game in Mexico City between the Chiefs and Rams was moved to Los Angeles after it was discovered that the field in Estadio Azteca was in poor condition due to “a difficult rainy season and a heavy multi-event calendar of events at the stadium.”

The NFL’s game on Oct. 14 last season between the Seattle Seahawks and Oakland Raiders set a NFL Wembley record with 84,922 in attendance.

That was broken on Oct. 28 when 85,870 watched the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Jaguars.

Including the three games last season, the NFL has drawn more than 84,000 in 16 consecutive games in Wembley.

Last October, Jaguars owner Shahid Khan decided to withdraw his $790 million offer to acquire Wembley Stadium in London, where the NFL has played most of its U.K. games as part of its International Series, since rebranded as the London Games, since 2007.

That has not detered the league from building its alliances in the U.K. or contemplating putting a franchise there.

“I believe that the fan base is here for a team," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told the media last season.

”Just in numbers and passion, I think the business community/commercial community is strong enough. The political support we have for this is extraordinary. I think all of those elements are here.”

However, Goodall emphasized that there would be significant logistical hurdles should the Jaguars or another team be based out of London.

“Where it's most challenging in my view is in the playoffs, because you can't really plan for that,” he said.

“So we could probably work the schedule in a fair way during the season, but when you get to the post-season it could be unfair to a team . . . So we've got to find an answer to that.”

But other than that? “I’m perfectly comfortable with this market and the size and passion for football. We wouldn't have a problem (having a team here).”

The NFL has acknowledged that there is strong support in London to host a Super Bowl there and that the league has considered the possibility.

However, said Goodell, “The ownership really feels strongly that that's a reward for our fans. If (we) had a franchise here, I think it would come into play. I think without a franchise it's probably difficult.

"My observation over the last 20, almost 30 years coming over here to watch NFL football is they are so smart about football,” said Goodell. “They are great football fans. They're responding at the right time and that's fun for us. That means we're making a tremendous amount of progress."

According to Tracey Crouch, U.K. Minister for Sport, “The NFL in London is going from strength to strength and I am delighted that we will have four games in the capital (in 2019), with Tottenham Hotspur's new stadium joining Wembley as a host venue.

“The league brings an incredible Super Bowl-style atmosphere to the U.K., with fans sporting jerseys from a range of NFL teams packing out Wembley this autumn in record numbers. I am sure the two games at Tottenham . . .  will also be a huge success as the U.K. will once again show its passion and enthusiasm for this fantastic sport."
