Anheuser-Busch Spikes NFL Presence With Official Bon & Viv Hard Seltzer Alliance

By Barry Janoff

August 28, 2019: Anheuser-Busch InBev, whose Bud Light label is the NFL’s official beer sponsor, has expanded its presence by signing its Bon & Viv brand as the NFL’s official hard seltzer sponsor.

The category is a first for the NFL and the first such deal for Bon & Viv, according to Anheuser-Busch.

Financial terms of the alliance were not shared.

This is the second new deal this week for the NFL, which earlier signed Oakley eyewear as an official on-field partner and licensee.

The league is still without an official vehicle and SUV partner after Hyundai did not renew its deal following Super Bowl LIII, but industry analysts anticipate that happening sooner rather than later.

Bon & Viv already has an NFL connection, including a 30-second spot during Super Bowl LIII, “The Pitch,” featuring its two mermaid spokespersons, Bonnie and Vivian; and presence in several NFL stadiums.

It also is available in MLB ballparks, including Nationals Stadium (Washington Nationals), Camden Yards (Baltimore Orioles) and Citizens Bank Park (Philadelphia Phillies), according to the brand.

The hard seltzer category is anticipated to reach $1 billion this year, according to industry analysts.

“As a sponsor of the NFL, fans will be able to enjoy Bon & Viv in 16 oz. cans in stadiums across the country,” according to Anheuser-Busch.

“The brand will also show up via dedicated TV spend in NFL games and on NFL.com and Twitter.”

This week, Bon & Viv shared the results of a campaign, the Ultimate Seltzer Showdown, which asked people who were connected to a polygraph machine and with $1,000 as a reward, whether they preferred Bon & Viv or rival White Claw Hard Seltzer.

White Claw is an alcoholic seltzer water beverage owned by Mark Anthony Brands, which also owns Mike's Hard Lemonade.

A launch spot for the NFL deal features ESPN NFL reporter Adam Scheffer connected to a polygraph machine and “truthfully” claiming his preference for Bon & Viv.

According to Bon & Viv, “Out of 50 participants (young adults, ages 25-39) polygraphed, 46 participants either preferred Bon & Viv Classic over White Claw Pure or were caught lying about their preference. Only four people truthfully stated that they preferred White Claw Pure.”

"We're so confident in the taste of Bon & Viv Classic that we wanted to put our money where our mouth was," Chelsea Phillips, vp-Beyond Beer Brands for Anheuser-Busch, said via the company. “Tasting is believing”

Recent Bon & Viv spots also include “Buoys.”

According to Anheuser-Busch, entrepreneur Nick Shields and Boathouse Beverage LLC created the hard seltzer category in 2013 with the launch of SpikedSeltzer. In 2016, Anheuser-Busch partnered with Boathouse Beverage to launch Bon & Viv.
