NFL Gets Multi-Media 100th Anniversary Party Started At Super Bowl Halftime

By Barry Janoff

January 28, 2019: In October, the NFL unveiled plans to celebrate its 100th anniversary during the 2019 season, a year-long celebration with a series of "NFL 100" events, initiatives and programming centered around fans, players and communities,

The league has jump-started the activation, releasing a teaser for the first spot, “Oh, Boy,” the full-length version of which will air just prior to the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show Feb. 3 on CBS.

The spot will feature more than 40 current and former NFL players, including 19 Hall of Famers and a total of 53 Super Bowl rings among them.

The premise: NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is overseeing a 100th Anniversary banquet that turns into an Animal House-inspired food fight.

Among the players who participated in the extended two-minute spot (in alphabetical order): Saquon Barkley, Odell Beckham Jr., Terry Bradshaw, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Jim Brown, Dick Butkus,  Aaron Donald, Larry Fitzgerald, Tony Gonzalez, Joe Greene, Rob Gronkowski, Todd Gurley, Franco Harris, Michael Irvin, Marshawn Lynch, Peyton Manning, Christian McCaffrey, Von Miller, Joe Montana, Ed Reed, Barry Sanders, Deion Sanders, Michael Strahan, Emmitt Smith, Richard Sherman, Mike Singletary, Juju Smith Schuster, LaDainian Tomlinson and Brian Urlacher.

Marketing will include all NFL league partners, local activation and efforts across all NFL media partners.

A special "NFL 100" logo will be prominently displayed throughout the 100th season.

That includes celebrations on the field, in stadiums, game broadcasts, NFL Films and NFL Network programming, and digital and social media content. In addition, the "NFL 100" logo will be featured on game balls and on every player's game jersey in the neck area.

NFL partners will also use the logo in activations and on an array of merchandise.

It will also be featured during such off-season events as the Draft in Nashville and enshrinement week at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton.

In addition, as part of the 100th season celebration, the NFL said it would launch a major philanthropic initiative at the Draft in Nashville.

“The season-long program is designed to inspire players, clubs, the league, and fans, all uniting to positively impact and honor communities across the country that are home to teams, players and fans,” said the league.

Following the launch of the NFL100 campaign during Super Bowl LIII, the celebration will officially kick off during the NFL Draft and build leading up to the first game of the 100th season at NFL Kickoff in 2019.

The NFL100 celebration will sustain throughout the season and will culminate at Super Bowl LIV (Feb. 2, 2020) in Miami.

"With fans at the center, NFL100 will be a big family reunion for all those across the country, and around the world, whose lives have been enriched by the sport of football," said Goodell said via the league.

"Over nearly 100 years, the NFL and the game of football have continued to evolve and grow. NFL100 is a chance to celebrate how far we've come and look ahead to the next 100 years."

According to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, on Sept. 17, 1920, a group of men gathered in Canton, Ohio at the Hupmobile showroom of Ralph Hay, owner of the hometown Bulldogs.

The result of that meeting was the birth of the American Professional Football Association, renamed in 1922 as the National Football League.

The NFL said that additional teasers, player portraits, and outtakes would be shared on NFL and player/legend social channels (#NFL100).

Among the planned celebratory programs:

• Weekends in local team markets will bring together high school football programs with fan festivals and NFL games that celebrate past, present and future players and coaches.

• A blue-ribbon panel of former players, general managers, coaches, NFL historians and media will select the All-Time Team and the ten greatest coaches in NFL history.

• The All-Time Team and many other on-field accomplishments will be celebrated throughout next year.

• NFL Media — including NFL Network and NFL Films — will offer original programming and content to celebrate the 100th season across multiple platforms.
