NFL Academy Seeks To Encourage, Mentor, Develop Student-Athletes In The U.K.

By Barry Janoff

May 7, 2019: In its ongoing efforts to build and support its presence in the U.K., the NFL has unveiled the NFL Academy, providing students with “pathways into employment, further education and even the potential opportunity to play NCAA college football in the United States.”

According to the league, “This life-changing opportunity is available for up to 80 students per year, ages 16-18. Selection for the NFL Academy program will be based on athletic ability, as well as educational and character assessment.”

Student-athletes will study courses of their choice at Barnet and Southgate College, North London in addition to athletic training, scheduled to begin September 2019.

Academy partner Nike will develop and supply apparel and on-field uniforms for the student athletes.

"To have Nike's support as a partner is a massive endorsement of the Academy," Alistair Kirkwood, NFL UK managing director, said via the league.

“Their expertise will be a valuable asset and something we know the students will be really proud of and excited about."

Among those who have pledged their support for the Academy and will serve in ambassadorial roles are London-born two-time Super Bowl winner Osi Umenyiora and Jason Bell, his colleague on BBC's NFL coverage.

Also confirmed are Odell Beckham Jr, Patrick Mahomes, JuJu Smith-Schuster, NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice; British-born running back Jay Ajayi (who was on the Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl LII championship team) and London-raised Efe Obada.

Other ambassadors will be named.

"The Academy is a first-of-its kind initiative that will deliver against three key elements: education, character development and football," said Kirkwood,.

”The inspiration for the idea was our long-term partnership with Tottenham Hotspur. As well as playing games at the new stadium, we had a desire to create something meaningful for the community on a year-round basis.”

On April 2, the first purpose-built NFL stadium to be constructed outside of the U.S. was officially opened.

The 62,000-seat, $1.3 billion Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will host NFL regular season games as part of a ten-year deal between the Premier League club and the NFL

Including the four upcoming 2019 games, only the Green Bay Packers have not played a regular season game in the U.K.

Including the three games last season, the NFL has drawn more than 84,000 in 16 consecutive games in Wembley.

According to Kirkwood, ”This is an opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of many young people, regardless of their experience of our sport.

“It is also an opportunity for us to create a pathway for players to get into the American college system and maybe even to the NFL itself."

”This is an opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of many young people, regardless of their experience of our sport."

The NFL and NFL UK have launched a Web site dedicated to the NFL Academy, and are supporting with a multi-media effort, including an intro spot.

In it, a voiceover with a very distinct British accent explains how athletes in the U.K, who enjoy NFL football are sometimes discouraged from playing the game.

“They say we can’t. They say we don’t stand a chance. Stick to what you know, they say,” the spot offers.

“Yeah, we’ve all heard that one. You don;t have the size, the speed, the strength. Don’t have the skills. Don’t know the plays. Can’t play in the NFL. Can’t win a Super Bowl.”

As shots of the aforementioned NFL players with British ties plays out, the spot continues, “Nah, man. Can’t do what? This? You reckon we ain’t strong enough? Fast enough? Smart enough? Tell me again what we can’t do.  Because from where I’m standing, we can, we do.”

Barnet and Southgate College will provide the students' education and has appointed a coaching staff that will work alongside NFL UK's development team to create the football program, according to Kirkwood.

Recruitment for the first class of approximately 80 students will take place over the next three months via a series of tryouts.

"The NFL Academy is looking for talented American football players, cross-over athletes or those who have yet to play the sport," according to the Web site, where a page breaks down potential positions and physical attributes needed to fill specific roles on the field.

"This is an opportunity to make a real difference to the lives of many young people, regardless of their experience of our sport,” said Kirkwood.

“It is also an opportunity for us to create a pathway for players to get into the American college system and maybe even to the NFL itself."

According to Darren Mepham, CEO for Barnet and Southgate College, “The NFL.joins a number of other sporting academies offered by the college, highlighting our breadth of experience in delivering these dual programs.

"It really is a fantastic opportunity for young people to be able to take a step towards achieving their sporting dreams."
