Trading Places: Panini America Unboxes Exclusive Card Deal With NFL

December 17, 2015: The NFL and Panini America said today that they have signed a new, long-term deal which makes Panini America the "sole manufacturer of traditional trading cards and stickers licensed by the NFL and NFL Players Assn."

The deal takes effect prior to the 2016 NFL Draft, scheduled for April 28-30. in Chicago.

Financial terms of the pact were not released.

The agreement also gives Panini America the "non-exclusive right to produce digital trading cards" through its recently released Panini Gridiron digital trading card app.

Topps also has a deal to produce digital trading cards for the NFL.

This agreement extends an exclusive deal Panini signed with NFL Players Inc., the licensing and marketing arm of the NFL Players Assn., in August 2014.

Panini America said it would support the alliance with multi-level marketing and activations around the league's marquee events, including the NFL Combine, NFL Draft, NFL Kickoff and Super Bowl "to promote and grow the NFL trading card category."

In addition, the Irving, Texas-based trading card and collectibles company has deals that include the NBA, NHL, NHL Players Assn. and the MLB Players Assn.

"This announcement symbolizes a landmark achievement for Panini America, and we are extremely proud to be awarded the exclusive license for traditional trading cards and stickers," Mark Warsop, CEO for Panini America, said in a statement.

"We are committed to continue building compelling products that honor and celebrate the NFL and look forward to working closely with the NFL to continue to grow the football trading card category in the U.S. and globally," said Warsop.

According to Leo Kane, svp-consumer products for the NFL, "We are pleased to expand our partnership with Panini America in order to better serve NFL fans, from children opening their first packs to long-time hobby collectors."

Kane said that since the company entered the U.S. market in 2009, "They have proven to be leaders in product development, innovation and marketing, and we look forward to working together to continue to grow the football trading card category."
