NHL Building Sport With China, But Still Not Planning To Participate In Olympic Games

By Barry Janoff

May 30, 2017: Having already scheduled two pre-season games in China, the NHL said it would seek to build its presence in the nation with players, sponsors and multi-level activation.

"We're working very hard and [we're] very focused with developing the Chinese market in part because we have been told by the Chinese government at very high levels that there is, leading to (the Beijing Winter Olympics in) 2022, a priority to develop winter sports," Gary Bettman, commissioner for the NHL, said during a media conference on Monday (May 29) in Pittsburgh prior to the first Stanley Cup Finals game between the Nashville Predators and the hometown Penguins.

"I was told by the minister of sport when I was there about a month ago that they would like to see 300 million more participants in winter sports, particularly and including hockey," said Bettman.

The first NHL games to be played in China are scheduled for Sept. 21 in the Mercedes-Benz Arena, Shangha; and Sept. 23 in the Huaxi LIVE Wukesong's LeSports Center, Beijing.

The 2017 NHL China Games presented by O.R.G. Packaging will feature the Los Angeles Kings vs. Vancouver Canucks, the first under a multi-year deal among the NHL, the China government and Bloomage International Group, a privately owned corporation that said it is "devoted to expanding sports and promoting a healthy lifestyle across the country."

AEG, the Kings' parent company, owns the venue in Shanghai.

Bloomage International Group owns the Huaxi LIVE Wukesong's LeSports Center.

According to the NHL, the Canucks and Kings have each held youth hockey camps in China in recent years.

NHL said it is "committed to working with sports bureaus across China to help develop grass-roots hockey programs."

Several other NHL clubs have conducted hockey camps for Chinese youth in recent years both in China and North America, including the Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders, Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals.

"We said we would work very closely with the government to try to help grow the game at all levels,” Bettman said during the media event. “They said they would help us grow the business of the game at all levels. So it looks like the making of a very good partnership."

The NHL is following in the footsteps of the NBA, which has played games in the nation dating back to 2004 (when the Sacramento Kings and the Houston Rockets played games in Shanghai and Beijing); has offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Taipei; and an official NBA China web site.

The Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves will play two pre-season games in China as part of the NBA Global Games China 2017, The games are scheduled for Oct. 5 in Shenzhen at the Shenzhen Universiade Center,; and Oct. 8 in Shanghai at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

Although the ’22 Winter Games will include hockey, Bettman said that its growth in China does not mean the league will participate in the Olympics.

"I was told by the minister of sport that they would like to see 300 million more participants in winter sports, particularly and including hockey."

The NHL has already stated that it would not send players to the next Winter Games, being played in 2018 in PyeongChang, South Korea.

"The issue of the Olympics of 2022 in all my meetings when I was in Beijing never came up, and I think the focus is more about long-term developing the sport, not necessarily what happens for two weeks in 2022," said Bettman.

The commissioner also stated that NHL non-participation in the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics in South Korea was a “settled issue.”

"Six weeks ago, we were very clear and definitive that the teams had no interest in going to the Olympics in PyeongChang."

"It is not and has not been (an open issue).”

Regarding the pre-season games, Trevor Linden, president of hockey operations for the Canucks, said this would be a long-term commitment.

"(We want) to figure out a sustainable long-term plan to be involved in the development of their hockey culture in China,”  Linden said when the China Games were unveiled in March.

"This isn't about doing some one off games but to be integrated at the grass-roots level. The games we play here in September are a nice piece of it, but if it's not backed up with grass-roots support, it doesn't make sense. It's going to be a comprehensive program. I know that's the NHL's plan and certainly that's the Vancouver Canucks' plan."
