NHL, Billie Jean King Form Alliance To Advance Diversity, Gender Equality

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

June 18, 2019:
The NHL has signed what it is calling a “groundbreaking partnership” with the Billie Jean King Leadership Initiative, which will “support research, action, advocacy and collaboration with organizations that have a significant community impact.”

The alliance was unveiled during the inaugural “Declaring our Principles — Advancing Equity: A Summit on Inclusion,” which took place today at Encore at Wynn Las Vegas.

The Summit focused on advancing diversity and gender equality across hockey and “showcased the league’s continued commitment to furthering these vital efforts.”

The alliance also includes a “commitment to continue to elevate the dialogue on diversity through Hockey is For Everyone, an initiative led by the NHL and NHL Players Assn., to promote inclusion on the ice, in locker rooms, boardrooms and the stands.”

The NHL is in Las Vegas this week for the NHL Awards presented by Bridgestone on June 19 in Mandalay Bay (NBCSN 8 PM ET).

The NHL has a busy schedule for its first post-season week, also including the NHL Draft June 21-22 in Rogers Arena, Vancouver (NBCSN 8 PM ET) and the NHL World Gaming Championship Tournament Final, June 18 in HyperX Esports Arena, Las Vegas (live on Twitch.tv/NHL, with taped coverage following the NHL Draft on NBCSN 11:30 PM ET).

As part of the initiative between the NHL and BJKLI, both sides said they would continue to focus on the importance of women to the growth of hockey, business and society.

“From the locker room to the board room, the National Hockey League understands that our future is linked to the continued development and promotion of women in all aspects of our sport.” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said during the meeting in Las Vegas.

“We are also thrilled to announce our first-ever Diversity and Inclusion Senior Leadership Council, and in partnership with the NHLPA, the Female Hockey Ambassador Program, both of which are aimed at increasing the participation of girls and women in hockey at the grassroots level and within the workplace.”

The Female Hockey Ambassador Program is the first initiative from the NHL and NHLPA Female Hockey Advisory Committee created earlier this year.

It will provide NHL clubs with funding and enhanced opportunities to use Female Hockey Ambassadors to serve as community liaisons and to execute grassroots marketing events, promotions and projects with a specific focus on girls and women.

Female hockey ambassadors will be either current or former National Team members, or elite level players, coaches, or role models.

According to Billie Jean King, who also was in attendance in Las Vegas, “We are proud of BJKLI’s partnership with the NHL and our combined commitment to diversity, inclusion and above all ‘Advancing Equity.'

“Achieving equality is a long road, but events and conversations like today pave the path forward. We are looking forward to a long-term and productive relationship with the NHL.”
