StubHub's Studs: Stanley Cup Champions St. Louis Blues Hottest Ticket In NHL

By Barry Janoff

September 18, 2019: The St. Louis Blues made NHL history last season by winning the first Stanley Cup championship in franchise history.

Now comes the payoff: The Blues, riding their seven-game Cup Finals win over the Boston Bruins this past June, are the hottest ticket in the NHL and their fan base is expanding well beyond The Gateway to the West.

The Blues show the largest ticket-sales growth among all NHL teams since the 2018-19 season, up 277%, and the team home opener on Oct. 2 — hosting the Washington Capitals — is the No. 1 selling ticket, according to online event and ticket marketplace destination StubHub.

In addition, entering the 2019-20 season, the Blues are on Stubhub’s Top Ten tickets sales for the first time and also rank among the Top Ten most popular team jerseys (based on eBay merchandise sales August 2018-August 2019), with sales of all Blues merchandise up 220%.

"After an exhilarating first-time victory over Boston, Blues fans are propelling record-breaking increase in ticket sales compared to the past four Stanley Cup champions, far surpassing the average growth of 40%," Akshay Khanna, GM-NHL for StubHub, said via the company.

“StubHub is seeing big growth from teams that went far in the 2018 playoffs, including the small-town Blues making big-time moves as the Stanley Cup champions, contributing to their monumental 277% growth since last year.”

Although the third-year Vegas Golden Knights are the top-selling team on StubHub for the third straight year — outselling No. 2 New York Rangers by 28% — the Blues are making a strong push up the list.

“The Golden Knights still have that newcomer excitement, but we also have the reigning first-time Stanley Cup champion Blues making their debut on StubHub’s Top Ten list of 2019,” said Khanna.

Five teams are on the Top Ten StubHub list for a sixth straight year, “showing the strength of a loyal fan base”: the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs.

A post-season run from the Nashville Predators drove the team to join the Blues as clubs making their debut in the Top Ten ticket sales list, according to StubHub.

“The 2019 NHL season has some unique storylines with the combination of both historic and emerging teams,” said Khanna.

The Top Ten most popular team jerseys (based on eBay merchandise sales August 2018-August 2019) is led by the Chicago Blackhawks, Pittsburgh Penguins, Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals and New York Rangers.

Among players, the Top Ten most in-demand players (based on eBay merchandise sales August 2018-August 2019) is led by Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins), Patrick Kane (Chicago Blackhawks), Alex Ovechkin (Washington Capitals), Jonathan Toews (Chicago Blackhawks) and Connor McDavid (Edmonton Oilers).

“Thanks to our breadth of inventory, eBay is poised to get an inside look at fans’ loyalties heading into the 2019-20 NHL season,” Sam Bright, eBay’s vp-soft goods, said via the company, which owns StubHub.

“For example, while Bruins merch is the most popular on eBay overall, fans are repping Blackhawks and Penguins jerseys more than those from Boston’s home team.”

Following the Blues hosting the Capitals, the Top Five in-demand games (based on ticket sales as of Sept. 18) are:

• Winnipeg Jets vs. New York Rangers (Oct. 3)

• Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Montreal Canadiens (Oct. 26)

• San Jose Sharks vs. Vegas Golden Knights (Oct. 2)

• NHL Winter Classic Nashville Predators vs. Dallas Stars (Jan. 1 in Dallas’ Cotton Bowl).
