Hard Seltzer On Ice: NHL Signs Boston Beer's Truly, First Alliance In $1B Category

By Barry Janoff

September 23, 2019:  The NHL has joined the burgeoning hard seltzer industry via a five-year pact naming The Boston Beer Company’s Truly Hard Seltzer the league’s official partner in the category.

The NHL deal comes on the heels of the NFL signing Anheuser-Busch hard seltzer brand Bon & Viv as its partner.

The hard seltzer category is anticipated to reach $1 billion this year, double the 2018 total, according to industry analysts.

Truly Hard Seltzer will have multi-media presence throughout the season, Stanley Cup Playoffs and Stanley Cup Final.

Jewel events include title sponsor of the Truly Hard Seltzer NHL Pregame fan fest at the 2020 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic in Dallas' Cotton Bowl Stadium and the 2020 NHL Stadium Series at U.S. Air Force Academy's Falcon Stadium.

Boston Beer said this would also be its first national sports league partnership as well as the first for Truly Hard Seltzer. Jim Koch is founder and Chairman of The Boston Beer Company.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"As the beer category continues to evolve, we're thrilled to become the first national sports league partner of The Boston Beer Company," Keith Wachtel, NHL chief business officer and evp, said via the league.

“With a thriving business across multiple categories, they are an ideal partner to engage with our avid fan base. We're excited to develop fun and unique activations across their portfolio of brands."

Among other deals in the category, the Kentucky Derby earlier this year signed White Claw is its official hard seltzer.

Sales of White Claw hard seltzer rose to more than $10 million during the first six months of 2019, up nearly 300% over the same period in 2018, according to the brand, a unit of Vancouver, BC-based Mark Anthony Group.

Since its 2016 debut, White Claw has reached a category-leading 50% of hard seltzer sales in 2019, ahead of Boston Beer's Truly at 30%, according to industry analysts.

Truly is Boston Beer’s top-selling product, with more than one-third of its retail sales, according to the company, which also handles Samuel Adams beer, Angry Orchard hard cider and Twisted Tea hard iced tea.

Truly Hard Seltzer marketing will encompass NHL broadcast and digital platforms, including NHL Network, NBC during tentacle events, NHL.com, and NHL social media destinations.

According to  Dave Burwick, The Boston Beer Company CEO, “As a category leader, we're seeing record demand for Truly year-round, not just during the summer months.

“Many NHL fans are already Truly drinkers and that's why this partnership is a natural fit heading into fall. NHL fans can cheer on their favorite team with a refreshing Truly in hand at a game or watching from home or a bar with friends."
