NHL Says Las Vegas Is In The Cards

March 14, 2009: The National Hockey League said it has signed a three-year deal with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to hold its annual awards event in the city, beginning this year. Financial terms were not disclosed. The 2009 NHL Awards, the first to originate from Las Vegas, will be broadcast live on on June 18 from the Pearl Concert Theater at he Palms Hotel Las Vegas on Versus in the U.S. and on CBC in Canada. Pro sports leagues generally are reluctant to hold events in Las Vegas, although the NBA played its 2007 All-Star Game there and the Arena Football League held two championship games there in recent years. Support includes an “NHL Awards Vegas Getaway” sweepstakes to give fans the opportunity awarding a trip for two to the 2009 NHL Awards. Fans across North America can enter for a chance to win at NHL.com/Vegas March 15-May 10. “Las Vegas specializes in shining the spotlight on outstanding performers,” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement. “Its innate energy offers an exciting setting for our celebration of excellence." The 2009 NHL Awards will include MVP (Hart Trophy), outstanding goaltender (Vezina Trophy), outstanding defenseman (Norris Trophy) and outstanding rookie (Calder Trophy). Back to Home Page
