NHL Unveils Outdoor, All-Star, Heritage Classic Dates, Sites For 2019-20 Season

NYSJ Sports-Entertainment Business News Service

January 1, 2019:
One day into the 2019 portion of the 2018-19 season is all it took for the NHL to unveil dates and sites for a bevy of jewel events for the 2019-2020 campaign.

Among the scheduled highlights, next season’s All-Star Game presented by Honda and All-Star Weekend will be in Enterprise Center in St. Louis on Jan. 24-26, 2020, hosted by the Blues.

The Dallas Stars will host the 2020 Bridgestone Winter Classic in Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas on Jan. 1.

Also outdoors, the Calgary Flames and Winnipeg Jets begin a series of three regular-season outdoor NHL games in 2019-20 when the 2019 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic returns to the schedule Oct. 26.

And the Colorado Avalanche will host the outdoor NHL Stadium Series game at the United States Air Force Academy's Falcon Stadium in Colorado Springs, Colorado on Feb. 15.

“These events, we’ve seen it throughout the years, wherever we put them on, they are sensational,” commissioner Gary Bettman said in unveiling 2019-2020 plans during the 2019 Bridgestone Winter Classic in Notre Dame Stadium on NBC.

"St. Louis was a great host for us for the Winter Classic (2017 in Busch Stadium), and in the final analysis, the total circumstances, including the substantial renovation that they've done of Enterprise Center made it the right time to go back. We have no doubt it will be a huge success."

St. Louis will host its third NHL All-Star game (1970 and 1988, both in St. Louis Arena) and first in the Blues home arena Enterprise Center.

NHL All-Star Weekend will include the All-Star Skills competition along with hockey-themed events, entertainment and activities.

"This is a great day for not only Blues fans, but for the city of St. Louis," Blues chairman Tom Stillman. said via the team.

”Our city, our great fans and our corporate partners have shown tremendous loyalty to the Blues since the team's inception in 1967, and landing a major event such as the 2020 Honda NHL All-Star Game is a testament to their relentless passion and support."

Regarding the 2020 Winter Classic, which will be the first outdoor game for the Stars, Bettman said, “These events, we’ve seen it throughout the years, wherever we put them on. they are sensational.”

"Growing up, January 1st was a big day because it was the Cotton Bowl, the Rose Bowl and the Orange Bowl — and I loved the Cotton Bowl," Steve Mayer, NHL evp and chief content officer, said via the league.

"So how do we thematically bring the Cotton Bowl back to January 1st? These are the kind of things that we'll do to honor that great stadium and what we think is one of the great sports traditions."

Bettman said the opponents for the Stars and Avalanche would be named in the next few weeks.

The Flames and Jets will play in Mosaic Stadium in Regina, Saskatchewan, in the fifth NHL Heritage Classic but first since 2016, when the Edmonton Oilers played the Jets in Investors Group Field in Winnipeg.

The inaugural Heritage Classic, and the first NHL regular-season game to be played outdoors, was in Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium in 2003, when the Montreal Canadiens faced the host Oilers.

The Flames played the Canadiens in the second Heritage Classic at Calgary’s McMahon Stadium in 2011.

"There's been a great deal of interest in the Regina market over the years, and they have very much wanted to host a game,” said Bettman.

The NHL Stadium Series game at the United States Air Force Academy's Falcon Stadium will be the second time the NHL plays a regular-season outdoor game at a U.S. service academy.

The Washington Capitals hosted the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 in Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in March 2018.

"We are proud and honored to be hosting the 2020 NHL Stadium Series at such a unique setting as the Air Force Academy," Josh Kroenke, Avalanche president/governor and vice chairman- Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, said via the team. ”We look forward to taking part in our second outdoor game after a very successful event at Coors Field in 2016.

“Our fans have been instrumental to our success since the franchise arrived in Denver, and we are thrilled that they will get this opportunity to experience an outdoor game at one of our nation's great institutions."
