NHL Unveils ASG Plans, Signs T-Mobile As Presenting Sponsor For '17 Awards, Draft

Special to NYSportsJournalism.com

May 30, 2017: Watching the Pittsburgh Penguins play the Nashville Predators for the Stanley Cup championship is not the only thing occupying NHL executives, marketers and fans these days.

The league has unveiled a bevy of news for upcoming events, including the site of the 2017-18 All-Star Game, details regarding the 2018 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series and the presenting sponsor for the 2017 NHL Awards and NHL Expansion Draft.

T-Mobile has signed on as presenting sponsor for the 2017 NHL Awards and NHL Expansion Draft, an organic move as both events are scheduled to take place on June 21 in T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, home of the expansion Vegas Golden Knights.

NBCSN and Sportsnet will broadcast the event live in the U.S. and Canada, respectively. The NHL said that the Tampa Bay Lightning and the city of Tampa would host the 2018 NHL All-Star, scheduled to take place in Amalie Arena on Jan. 28.

The venue also will host on Jan. 27 the NHL All-Star Skills Competition.

The Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs will play outdoors next season in Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on the campus of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland — which is about a 40-minute drive from Washington — on March 3, part of the 2018 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series.

"The 2017 NHL Awards and NHL Expansion Draft will be a historic night for the city of Las Vegas and the Golden Knights," Keith Wachtel, NHL chief revenue officer and evp, said in a statement.

"T-Mobile has been a proud supporter of hockey in Vegas from the start, so it's only fitting for T-Mobile to join us in making this one of the most memorable nights ever."

As presenting sponsor of the 2017 NHL Awards and NHL Expansion Draft, the NHL said that T-Mobile would be featured prominently in the event's multimedia tune-in campaign, including the NBCSN broadcasts of the event, as well as throughout NHL Network, NHL.com and NHL Social.

T-Mobile would also serve as the presenting sponsor of NHL Network's live NHL Awards and NHL Expansion Draft preview and recap shows.

In reference to the All-Star Game, "We are looking forward to bringing the 2018 NHL All-Star celebration to the Tampa Bay area," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said during a media conference this week in Pittsburgh, where the first two games of the Stanley Cup Finals are being played.

"In addition to the events on the ice, we're planning outside activities which will embrace the Tampa Bay community and Gasparilla events — as well as the Florida sunshine. We know Jeff Vinik, the Lightning and Amalie Arena will be outstanding hosts as the NHL family gathers for our mid-season showcase,” said Bettman.

According to Jeff Vinik, chairman and governor for the Lightning, "We are thrilled to host the 2018 NHL All-Star Game at Amalie Arena. We've worked hard over the past several years to transform Tampa Bay into a hockey market. The honor of hosting the All-Star game validates that work, but it's not the end of our efforts. We pledge to work alongside the NHL as well as leaders across Tampa Bay to deliver a world class experience for All-Star players, fans and partners."

The league said that additional details on 2018 NHL All-Star festivities, including ticket information, special events and television broadcasting information would be released at a later date.

Regarding the Coors Light NHL Stadium Series game between the Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs, Bettman the game in Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium would launch a series of Coors Light NHL Stadium Series games in U.S. Military Academies over the next few seasons.

"If you've ever seen an Army-Navy football game, you can just imagine what that setting will be like outside," Capitals owner Ted Leonsis said in a statement. "Annapolis is such a fun town, so I'm sure it will be good for the community and also the people coming in from Washington, D.C.

"We had such a great experience with the Winter Classic in D.C," Leonsis said. "Our organization really knows how to mobilize and be great hosts and sell a lot of tickets and I think it will be a spectacular setting. It will be very, very loud, and for us to support all of the men and women in the service will be terrific."
