NHL, Players Association Decide To Put World Cup Of Hockey On Ice: 'Not Realistic'

By Barry Janoff

January 16, 2019: The NHL’s plan to build a world competition held every four years featuring top players and teams from around the world has been put temporarily on ice.

The NHL and the NHL Players’ Assn. said that plans to stage a World Cup of Hockey 2020 were “no longer realistic.”

The World Cup of Hockey was last held in 2016 in Toronto, with the league and players seeking to build a platform similar to the FIFA World Cup.

Plans to stage a 2020 event began to form almost immediately after Team Canada defeated Team Europe for the title.

Now, after discussions, both the NHL and NHLPA agreed to put off staging the event.

"The NHL and the NHLPA had another constructive meeting today in Toronto,” the NHL said via a statement.

“While the parties have now jointly concluded that it is no longer realistic to try to schedule a World Cup of Hockey for the fall of 2020, they plan to continue their dialog with a hope of being able to schedule the next World Cup event as part of a broader agreement, which would include a long-term international event calendar."

The 2016 World Cup in Toronto including six teams of players from their respective nations plus two additional teams, one comprise of the best players 23 or younger from the U.S. and Canada, the other a 23-and-younger from Team Europe.

The countries that fielded teams were the U.S., Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, Russia and Sweden.

More than 170 NHL players participated.

Among the companies attached to the two-week 2016 event were adidas, Air Canada, AutoTrader.ca, Canadian Tire, EA, Esso/Exxon Mobil, Geico, Honda, Molson Coors, PepsiCo, Pizza Pizza, Rogers Communications SAP, Scotiabank, Sonnet, Ticketmaster, Tim Hortons, Upper Deck and Visa.

Games aired across ESPN networks.

A Scotiabank World Cup of Hockey Fan Village, a free, ten-day fan festival, was held in Toronto's historic Distillery District.

This past November, Bill Daly, deputy commissioner for the NHL, said the looming expiration of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement, which runs through the 2021-22 season, was impacting progress on World Cup negotiations.

"Our position is we don't want to hold it if there is labor uncertainty," Daly told the media at the time. ”We really need labor certainty to play it. It didn't work so well in 2004 when we tried that."

In 2004, a labor dispute saw the cancellation of the entire 2004-05 NHL season.

The World Cup of Hockey began in 1996 as the advanced platform of the Canada Cup (1976-1991). That year, it was won by the team representing the U.S.

A World Cup of Hockey was next held in 2004, won by Canada, staged just prior to the season cancellation, then not again until 2016.

Regarding the postponement of the 2020 event, the NHLPA said in a statement, "The players are focused on finding the proper time to schedule the World Cup of Hockey within the context of an overall international hockey calendar.

“While we and the league have discussed the possibility of holding the next World Cup in September 2020, we jointly concluded that it is unrealistic to expect that preparations for the event would be completed in time.

No timetable was given for additional World Cup discussions or what year the NHL and NHLPA might be targeting for the next potential event.

"We look forward to continuing our discussions with the league,” said the NHLPA.
