December 15, 2021: In a move that is becoming more pervasive across the college sports marketing landscape, Nike has signed Reilyn Turner, a sophomore forward on the UCLA women’s soccer team as the brand’s first a NIL student athlete partner.
Financial terms were not shared.
As part of Turner’s sponsorship, Nike and Turner — last year’s Pac-12 Freshman of the Year — will work with Los Angeles–based community partners.
“As a Black woman and Mexican American, I think about those who have paved the way for me and how they used their platforms to create so much change, even beyond sport,” Turner said via Nike.
“I hope to be a role model for those around me and those after me, and I’m so excited to be a part of what Nike is bringing to the future of women’s sport.”
Nike is also an official partner with UCLA via a six-year deal signed in 2020, which includes soccer and 21 other teams.
Nike’s Jordan Brand is the official outfitter for UCLA basketball and football.
According to the brand, “Nike has always been honored to partner with athletes who share its belief that sport can break barriers, push limits, spark change and contribute to creating a more equitable future.”
Turner is represented by Wasserman Soccer.
Her father, Nate Turner, is a former NFL wide receiver who played with the San Diego Chargers and the New Orleans Saints. He currently is head football coach at LA Southwest College.
Her mother, Felicia Madrigal, played soccer at UNLV.
She was born in Lakewood, Calif., and currently lives in Aliso Viejo, Calif., about 50 miles southeast of Los Angeles.
According to Turner, “Whether it’s the community you grow up with or the community you grow into, there’s so much positive impact that can come from how they influence you and how you influence them.”
