• China-based e-commerce giant Alibaba said it set a sales record on Singles Day, 11-11 — aka  the Double 11 shopping festival, “the world’s largest 24-hour shopping event" — with sales across Alibaba’s shopping platforms at $38.3 billion involving more than 200,000 brands. That exceeded last year’s record of nearly $30.5 billion. Alibaba also said that in its first hour, it generated an estimated $13 billion in sales. By comparison, in 2018, Black Friday sales were $6.2 billion, and Cyber Monday sales reached $7.9 billion, according to Forbes.

• Volcom has signed a deal to become the official apparel sponsor for the U.S. Snowboard Team. Volcom, a part of Authentic Brands Group, replaces Burton, which had been the apparel supplier for the group for the past four Winter Olympics. Financial terms of the deal, which runs through the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, were not shared.

• NBC’s Sunday Night Football on Nov. 10 became the decade’s (2010-19) only primetime series to average 20 million-plus viewers for 100 different broadcasts. American Ido is second with 69. The Minnesota Vikings’ 28-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys averaged a Total Audience Delivery of 23.5 million viewers across NBC TV, NBC Sports Digital and NFL Digital platforms.

• CBS Sports said its coverage of the SEC on CBS with No. 2 ranked LSU beating No. 3 ranked Alabama, 46-41, on Nov. 9  “delivered a massive audience, had an average of 16.636 million viewers and scoring a fast national household rating/share of a 9.7/24 . . . the  highest-rated regular-season college football game (excluding Conference Championships) on any network in eight years.

• Calling it the company’s biggest brand launch in more than a decade, Coca-Cola North America has unveiled Aha sparkling water, eyeing a March 2020 drop at retail. “As the largest and fastest-growing part of the water business, mainstream flavored sparkling water is a segment we know we must double-down on,” Celina Li, vp-water, Coca-Cola North America, said via the company. “Aha is our big-bet brand in this big-bet category.” Full story here.

NBA Teams Unveil Nike City Edition Jerseys, Inspirations Behind Their Designs

December 27, 2017: This season, to coincide with the start of Nike's eight-year, $1 billion deal as the NBA's official on-court uniform provider, teams were allowed to sign jersey-patch logo deals and expand from the traditional two jersey options (home and away, plus a more recent second home edition) to four different uniform styles.

Although there have been significant design flaws — mainly jerseys tearing and ripping during games, which Nike said it is resolving (presumably there was no pun intended by the Portland Trail Blazers, who display the Rip City team nickname on their jersey) — there have been to date three jersey editions worn by players: the Association, Icon and Statement.

Nike and the NBA have now released the fourth uniform category, The City Edition, plus the stories that inspired their designs.

The inspirations range from the Brooklyn Bridge (Nets), Daytona 500 (Indiana Pacers) and Mardi Gras (New Orleans Pelicans) to Washington D.C. monuments (Wizards), the military (San Antonio Spurs) and the parquet floor of the Boston Celtics.

All but three teams have unveiled City Edition uniforms.

The Houston Rockets, New York Knicks and Toronto Raptors said they would release their City Edition uniforms for the 2017-18 season at a later date.

All 30 teams in the NBA will get a new City Edition uniform every year, according to Nike, “with influences coming from a myriad of places, but always focused on the fans and city that support them.

“The Nike NBA City Edition uniforms represent insights and emotion from the court to the upper deck to the cities’ streets, in pursuit of a unique way to capture each team and its city in a way that respects the past and present of the clubs while also positioning them for the future,” said Nike.

Members of the defending NBA Champion Golden State Warriors will wear Chinese Heritage alternate uniforms for select games during the 2017-18 season “as a nod to the strong Chinese culture in the Bay Area,”

Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and the other Warriors will first wear the Chinese Heritage alternate uniforms at home on Jan. 25. Other Chinese Heritage merchandise includes hats, shirts and sweatshirts.

According to the team, the Bay Area has three of the Top Five Asian populations in the U.S.: Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose (the others are New York and Los Angeles).

For LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers, “There is a cool new vibe about Cleveland," Tracy Marek, Cavaliers CMO, said in a statement. "With the design of the City Edition we wanted to make a bold statement about who we are today — a united community that is proud of ‘The Land,’ protective of our place in the universe and committed to defending our home court together,”

The Los Angeles Lakers City Edition was “influenced by the story of basketball in Los Angeles, designed with inspirations from our storied past.” The team said that Kobe Bryant, whose two jersey numbers (8, 24) “is the first Laker legend to inspire the team's City Edition design.”

The Los Angeles Clippers, who, like the Lakers, play in Staples Center, said they were “influenced by SoCal’s beach culture w/ design elements inspired by board shorts. The Clippers City Edition uniform celebrates the team’s history in San Diego w/ colors & nautical details inspired by the era.”

According to the Boston Celtics, “While Boston has seen many different leaders and legends, all of the franchise’s success happened under the same roof. The parquet floor of “The Garden” has become synonymous with the Celtic green and white.”

The team said its City Edition uniform “pays tribute to this unique hardwood floor and the man credited with starting the dynasty, Red Auerbach.”

The belt buckle highlights the Celtics’ most recent NBA Championship (2008) while gray, “the color of unity, was incorporated in the uniform to signify the large regional fan base spread across New England that rallies behind the Celtics year in and out.”

The Brooklyn Nets were inspired by the Brooklyn Bridge, calling it "more than a roadway; it is a lifeline connecting busy and diverse communities.

Graphic wiring pattern was, per the team, inspired by the bridge's steel cables, and the mantra, "Brooklyn Unite," above the jock tag helps the City Edition uniform to "celebrate the bridge the team has built with its fans and its neighbors."

The San Antonio Spurs said they “are proud to call Military City, USA our home. Our new uniform uniform honors the service men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces, many who have also called San Antonio home.”

The City Edition uniform for the Indiana Pacers uniform references the iconic Dayton 500 and the tradition of automative racing in Indiana. The design includes a checkerboard flag and finish line while the player number is intended to mimic the numbers on classic race cars.

The Dallas Mavericks City Edition Jersey “reflects the swagger of the Big D and the vibrancy of Dallas nights.”

The New Orleans Pelicans City Edition uniform “celebrates the vibrant life of NOLA during Mardi Gras.”

The Philadelphia 76ers said their City Edition uniform “celebrates American freedom with a parchment paper-inspired base color and script that mimics the original Declaration of Independence. The “76” on the shorts nods to the Bi-Centennial celebration held in Philadelphia.

The Washington Wizards City Edition uniform “celebrates the District of Columbia and our capital's team. It features a marble pattern on the side panels that comes from the Washington monument and a beveled effect on the numbers that resemble the styling of iconic Washington D.C. monuments.”

The Portland Trail Blazers City Edition features a plaid pattern “inspired by legendary coach Jack Ramsay’s unique wardrobe and the historical fashion trends of the Northwest. The Rip City mantra proudly represents the community, culture and fans, while the city flag creatively influences the red graphic embellishments.”

The Detroit Pistons City Edition uniform features “chrome details and sleek design lines that create a modern and clean look to these automotive-inspired jerseys and shorts. Motor City is prominently featured across the chest and a ‘D’ logo on the waistband is a nod to the team’s move back to the city and represents the civic pride of the fan base.”

The Phoenix Suns said their uniform is a “special tribute to the Hispanic heritage of the community the Suns have proudly represented for 50 years.”

In describing the inspirations for their jerseys, according to the Milwaukee Bucks, “Milwaukee is defined by two things: the cold winters that roll in off the edge of Lake Michigan and Cream City brick, formed from the clay found in the Menomonee River Valley.

“Just as the distinctive clay is the foundation upon which Milwaukee was built, the color is the foundation for the Bucks Cream City Edition uniform. The uniform draws additional color inspiration from the full palette of the city and its surrounding region.”

A Buck head is displayed on the jersey, while a silhouette of the state of Wisconsin appears on the belt buckle graphic.

Expanding on their City Edition jersey, the Warriors said the Chinese Heritage alternate uniform “pays tribute to that strong Chinese culture and the prosperity that the region and the Warriors have enjoyed.

“The Chinese characters for prosperity are proudly placed on the waistline of the shorts as the chest logo combines the Golden Gate Bridge and classic symbolism. The suspension bridge detail, that has appeared on previous Warriors uniform Editions, remains on the shorts.”

“The Bay,” which appears on the front of the jersey, “recognizes the importance of the entire Bay Area to the Warriors organization. In coming seasons, the Warriors will continue to use “The Bay” uniform highlighting a variety of heritages special and unique to the Bay Area.”

In more detail regarding the Cavaliers uniforms, the team said that their City Edition “combines the updated and contemporary look of the Cavs brand with signature elements that are synonymous with Cleveland.

“Gold and two-tones of gray form the shape of the uniform side panels. The shape and design is inspired by the iconic giant 'Guardians of Transportation' sandstone sculptures that stand guard over Cleveland’s Hope Memorial bridge. (The Guardians are mythic figures that protect those entering and leaving the city.)

The Cavs secondary shield logo is inset as the “head” of the sculpture on both side panels of the jersey to symbolize protection of The Land.

A small square gold patch on the back-center collar of each jersey displays the number “1” positioned inside an outline of the Larry O’Brien trophy to represent the franchise’s first NBA championship in 2016. This is a standard feature on the uniforms of all teams that have won an NBA championship.”

The shorts showcase the State of Ohio at the center of the waistband and the Ohio flag underneath the bottom flap, “two unique features of the uniform that are a nod to Cavs fans across the state.”

Hello Barry. Nice article, but slight correction is needed for your comments regarding the Indiana Pacers City Edition uniforms. The design was inspired by the city's rich tradition in racing and hosting the historic Indianapolis 500 (the iconic annual race on the IndyCar calendar and the largest single-day sporting event in the world), not the NASCAR Daytona 500.
