October 31, 2013: One year ago, Hurricane Sandy devastated lives and caused hundreds of millions in dollars in damage in a way that continues to have impact.
One of the victims was the 2012 ING New York City Marathon, which was cancelled.
This past March, the companion Boston Marathon also took a devastating hit when two men exploded bombs at the finish line that killed three people and injured more than 200.
Now, New York Road Runners and its marketing partners have hit the ground running for a series of activations leading to the 2013 ING New York City Marathon on Nov. 3.
This year's event also marks the end of the alliance between ING and the Marathon, with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) taking over as title sponsor in 2014 under an eight-year deal.
Concurrently, it marks the first national broadcast of the race on ESPN.
Also for the first time, United Airlines will be the presenting sponsor of the Marathon Opening Ceremonies.
Among the marketing partners leading the way prior to and on race day are ASICS America, Foot Locker, United Airlines, Nissan, Dunkin’ Donuts, Dove Men+Care, PowerBar, Gatorade, Poland Spring, TCS, Coors Light, Timex and Tiffany.
The ING New York City Marathon will be presented live on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes+. For those who have video subscriptions with affiliated providers, the race will also be available via WatchESPN.
The 2013 ING New York City Marathon Mobile App Powered by Tata Consultancy Services will allow spectators to track up to ten runners, view results and locate marathon information. The free app is available at the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store.
On the Run, NYRR’s behind-the-scenes Web cast takes viewers inside the ING New York City Marathon. It will air now through Saturday and then Monday following the race.
According to John Gassner, vp-business development and strategic partnerships for New York Road Runners, “We are excited to have such an incredible group of partners play an integral role in this year’s Marathon experience. Their commitment to our sport and community, along with their creative approach to engaging everyone from runners to spectators to online fans, will make the 2013 Marathon experience one of the best ever both in New York and on the global stage.”
