May 14, 2015: As it turns out, Odell Beckham Jr. secured his spot on the cover of EA Sports' Madden NFL 16 on Nov. 23, 2014 when he made what is being called the "catch of the year" against the Dallas Cowboys.
The New York Giants Pro Bowl wide receiver was named to front the 2016 video game franchise in a vote by the public-at-large, which saw him defeat tight end Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots.
“Odell Beckham Jr. is a true playmaker and a perfect fit for this year’s game,” Randy Chase, senior director of marketing for EA Sports, said in a statement. “He’s an unstoppable force out on the field, and the Madden NFL 16 cover is further vindication that the fans believe he’s a player to watch in the coming years.”
Beckham becomes the first member of the Giants to appear on a Madden NFL cover.
Over the past two weeks, people voted via Madden Ultimate Team, Madden NFL Mobile and ESPN.com, initially deciding from among Beckham, Gronkowski, Antonio Brown (WR Pittsburgh Steelers) and Patrick Peterson (CB Arizona Cardinals).
EA Sports got the marketing bandwagon for Madden NFL 16 rolling with a TV spot and personal appearances by Beckham and Gronkowski. Additional multi-media efforts will follow through the release of the game on Aug. 25.
Beckham in 2014 was named the AP's Offensive Rookie of the Year and set a bevy of rookie records for the Giants, including most receiving yards in a season (1,305), most receptions (91), most receptions in a game (12, Dec. 14 verses the Washington Redskins) and most 100+ yard games (7).
