Even If NHL Melts, The Outdoor OfficeMax Hockey City College Classic Is Coming

Special to NYSportsJournalism

October 11, 2012: Among the casualties of the current NHL lockout are the 2012-13 pre-season, most of the games in October and, possibly, the outdoor Winter Classic scheduled to take place in the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) Stadium. But fans can still satisfy their Hockey Jones elsewhere.

OfficeMax has signed a deal to become title sponsorship of the Hockey City Classic in Chicago, the first outdoor college hockey doubleheader at Soldier Field, which is scheduled for Feb. 17, 2013. Soldier Stadium opened in 1924 but has since been completely renovated.

Financial terms of the title sponsorship deal were not disclosed.

The OfficeMax Hockey City Classic is being organized by Intersport, a Chicago-based sports and entertainment marketing agency, in partnership with Soldier Field, the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Sports Commission.

The doubleheader will feature Notre Dame against Miami and Minnesota taking on Wisconsin.

Other sponsors for the event include Citi and La Quinta.

The OfficeMax Hockey City Classic will be preceded by two weeks of events from Feb. 1-18. Activities will include two days of free public skating; youth, high school and adult hockey events; and private ice rentals.

"OfficeMax is pleased to sponsor the Hockey City Classic to bring collegiate hockey to a premier Chicago arena and winter excitement to the region," John Kenning, president of contract for Naperville, Ill.-based OfficeMax, said in a statement.

"We're as much a member of the Chicagoland community as we are a business here, and we're pleased to support an event that promises to both entertain and celebrate this great city."

According to Charlie Besser, Intersport president and CEO, "It is an honor to have OfficeMax lend its strength to the Hockey City Classic as the title sponsor. Building a great event for Chicago is good for business and OfficeMax is demonstrating great leadership."
