Speed Skater Apolo Ohno Flies With Alaska Airlines In Quest For More Olympic Gold

September 15, 2009: Speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno, who since 1999 has won 11 national championships, 18 world championships, three World Cup overall titles and five Olympic medals, just got a little faster. Alaska Airlines has signed a deal to sponsor Ohno in his quest to win gold at the 2010 Winter Games. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The 27-year-old Ohno, who earlier this month qualified for the U.S. team that will compete in Vancouver in February, also has marketing deals with Coca-Cola, Winning Factor Training Systems and Synertek Colostrum. Ohno will have the Alaska Airlines logo on his speed skating gear, and the carrier has a micro-site linked from its home Web page where Ohno will post exclusive content such as a personal blog, video clips and training tips. Additional marketing efforts were not released.
The native of the Seattle area will compete in four qualifying World Cup competitions from September through November prior to the Olympics. Ohno will be seeking to add to his two gold medals, which he won in 2002 and 2006,
"As one of the greatest U.S. short-track speed skaters of our generation and a Northwest native, we feel Apolo Ohno is a natural fit with our airline," Steve Jarvis, Alaska Airlines' vp-marketing, sales and customer experience, said in a statement.
According to Ohno, "My racing career started in Vancouver and that experience changed my life. Coming back to my roots in the Pacific Northwest to compete for my sixth medal is especially meaningful, and it is an honor to partner with my hometown airline in the most important race of my life."
