Can’t Top Ohtani: Record-Setter Shohei Has Most Popular MLB Jersey For 2024

September 30, 2024: When it comes to numbers, the man who wears No. 17 and created the 50-50 club is No. 1.
In his first season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Shohei Ohtani finished atop the list of best-selling MLB player jerseys.
Ohtani also finished 2023 with the most popular player jersey in MLB for the season, with his No. 17 Los Angeles Angels attire topping the list for the first time in his career.
He had appeared in the Top 10 after two prior seasons (2018, 2021).
The list was unveiled jointly today by MLB and MLB Players, Inc. based on sales from MLBShop.com of Nike jerseys since Opening Day.
Sales figures were not released.
Ohtani also remains the first Japanese player to lead the list since MLB and the MLB Players Assn. began releasing jersey rankings in 2010.
Ohtani’s jersey surpassed all MLB players not only in the U.S., but Japan and worldwide.
The Dodgers had two players in the Top Five, with Mookie Betts at No. 4; and a MLB-leading four players in the Top 20, with Freddie Freeman and Clayton Kershaw at No. 18 and No. 19, respectively.
Philadelphia Phillies All-Star Bryce Harper returned to the Top Five with the second-most popular player jersey in the league en route to the Phillies first NL East championship since 2011.
MLB home run leader Aaron Judge was No. 3 for the second consecutive year after helping guide the New York Yankees to an AL East title.
Francisco Lindor of the New York Mets rounded out the Top 5.
Teammate Pete Alonso (No. 15) re-joined the Top 20 for the first time since 2022.
Despite missing much of the season, Atlanta Braves Ronald Acuña Jr. finished with the No. 6 best-selling jersey.
MLB said the Top 20 players represent six different countries and territories: Canada, Dominican Republic, Japan, Puerto Rico, U.S. and Venezuela.
Ohtani this past season became the first player in MLB history to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in the same season, ultimately totaling 54 homers and 59 stolen bases.
Ohtani's 54 homers led the NL (second in MLB behind Judge's 58) while his 59 steals put him second to the Cincinnati Reds Elly De La Cruz (67) across MLB.
That makes him just the third player all-time to finish Top Two in MLB in both categories — and the first since two Hall of Famers more than 110 years ago: Ty Cobb in 1909 and Honus Wagner in 1908.
